"Curves" Experiences? ...
Hello ...
I know that Curves has been discussed here before, but I wondered if anyone who is currently going to Curves might be willing to share any thoughts or experiences. I've been going to a "regular" gym for over four years, and I'm wondering if perhaps I need to try something different, since I don't seem to be as motivated to go to the gym as I had been. Also, the class schedule there has been cut back and changed since I joined. I went to Curves yesterday for one of three visits for which I qualified through their promotion with Kraft Foods. As someone used to the slower pace of using free weights in a strength-training class, and who is accustomed to using a treadmill at the gym for cardio, the Curves workout, with the changes every 30 seconds, was very different for me. I'm wondering -- for those of you who are going to Curves -- are you finding it effective for weight loss? What about for strength and building muscle? I have two more free visits before I need to decide whether or not to join. The membership fee would be $75.00 if I join in February, and the monthly fee with a one-year membership is $39.00. I don't know if these are standard rates or whether they're particular to this area. Anyway -- any thoughts, observations, et cetera, about Curves would be much appreciated! Thanks! Linda W. |

Hi Linda, I've been going to Curves for a little over 6 months. In this time I've lost 7 pounds, 2% body fat, 2 inches off my bust, hips, thighs and upper arms and 3 inches off my waist. I'm very near my goal weight so this has been great progress for me. I haven't made any drastic changes in my diet during this time. I joined as I'm 61 and have osteopenia. I needed to add some type of weight training to my exercise routine. I found it hard to fit a regular gym into my 10 hour workdays and once I arrived home I never quite made it to my exercise roomg Stopping on the way home for 30 minutes of circuit training is very doable for me. I joined during one of their campaigns and the initial fee was waived. My monthly fee is $29.00. I think this fee varies by area. Building muscles?? I'm definitely beginning to see some muscle definition in my upper arms. I've always been a biker so my legs have never been a problem area. I carry all my weight around the middle so I'll have to continue reducing the body fat to see major improvements in that area. I'll have to wait until the next bone scan to see if there has been any improvement with bone density. Hopefully the weight training and medication are helping. Beverly |

Thanks so much for sharing your "Curves" experience with me. It sounds as if you have found it very beneficial. May I ask -- how many times a week do you go on average? And thanks again -- and congratulations on your progress and success! Linda W. |

The gist of it is that it's nice for people who want to go from very unfit to somewhat fit, but someone who is already in decent shape won't find much benefit from them. Beverly, a busy 61 year old over-weight lady, is their perfect client - but I recall hearing that she's outgrowing the place, too. In sum, I'd find it a good place to start out at, maybe 3 to 6 months, but you really need to progress to something with both eccentric and concentric movements (like free weights or Nautilus) if you want continued progress. "Curves" Experiences? ...
"Linda W." wrote in message om... Hello ... I know that Curves has been discussed here before, but I wondered if anyone who is currently going to Curves might be willing to share any thoughts or experiences. I started out at Curves and was going there for a few months before I started my diet. I continued there for another year. When I wasn't dieting, I didn't get much from the workout, but at least I was working out. When I did my diet, I was able to benefit from the workout. These days, the workout isn't challenging enough for me so I am now doing a weight routine at a gym. The benefits of Curves for me were the travel passes for when I was out of town, the convenience of a short workout, and their hours of operations. I've been going to a "regular" gym for over four years, and I'm wondering if perhaps I need to try something different, since I don't seem to be as motivated to go to the gym as I had been. Also, the class schedule there has been cut back and changed since I joined. Are you doing weights at the gym or just the classes? Do they have personal trainers? If so, you might want to consider a few sessions to develop a workout plan that you would enjoy and would help you accomplish your goals. I'm wondering -- for those of you who are going to Curves -- are you finding it effective for weight loss? What about for strength and building muscle? It was not my only source of exercise so I don't know how effective it was. I added a lot to the routine including dumbells on the circuit (not allowed in some places) and some serious ab work & yoga after the circuit. I have two more free visits before I need to decide whether or not to join. The membership fee would be $75.00 if I join in February, and the monthly fee with a one-year membership is $39.00. I don't know if these are standard rates or whether they're particular to this area. Ours was $29 a month if you let them take the money from your checking account each month, $39 if you wanted to pay them each month. Jenn |

A couple weeks in January I only made it twice a week due to some nasty weather and a heavy work load. On the weeks I don't get there as often as I would like I exericse at home on the treadmill or weight bench and dumbbells. Beverly |
