Glucophage and weight loss plateau
Greetings,
Can starting on Glucophage potentially stall weight loss? Based on what I have read on the Glocophage XR website, it seems to be the only drug that does not stall weight loss. But I am begining to suspect that it is the culprit in our case. Any comments, experience appreciated. Thanks. |

When I started taking metformin (Glucophage) I experienced a sudden decrease in appetite and lost 3-5 lbs. over the course of 10 days. This effect subsided after about 12-14 days, but I did not gain weight. |

My VERY SHORT term results follow: 1) metformin has quieted the binge monkey. 2) hunger/satisfaction perceived is much improved. 3) sleep has been better. the rest: 1) urine is darker 2) can't tell that i've lost any weight at all ... (am trying hard though) 3) feels like some water retention going on (based on clothes fit) 4) lower energy 5) some "headache" or head pressure which goes away with food. I've read success stories Metformin for non-diabetics. Wish others would write their experiences. |

Thanks for the reply everyone.
DW started on Glucophage XR 10 days back to counter PCOS. We have been LCing for 2 months now and have had decent success. But for the past week or so her weight loss has stalled. I am suspecting whether this has something to do with the medication or not? How does Glucopage work with LC diets? anyone with experience? "Kate" wrote in message om... "Marshall P. Glucophage and weight loss plateau
I'm on met for PCOS. I can't comment on stalling weight loss because I
was on it before starting LC. On the plus side, it has helped my insulin resistance because my acanthosis nigricans has faded (it used to be blackish-brown and now is hardly noticeable). On the negative side, I still deal with diarrhea occasionally (usually after some thing carby or spicy)...they don't call it GlucoPurge for nothing! Jolene Kate wrote: I do not eat low-carb. In the first two weeks I lost about 15 pounds. I don't think the metformin changed my appetite, but since I started them at the same time, I can't tell for sure. Can your blood sugar get too low or can you be at higher risk of lactic acidosis if you LC while taking metformin/glucophage? I'm goin on a high dose - 1000mg twice a day (2000mg total) but currently I'm working my way up slowly to try and avoid the tummy troubles. Felt awfully ill last night because I took my dose half an hour after dinner instead of *with*, because we ate out and I didn't have it with me ... does this go away with time, or will I have to find a little container and always have a dose with me in case we eat out? cheers Rachel (New Zealand) |

Glucophage and weight loss plateau
Rachel,
It is perfectly fine to low carb while taking Metformin. It is extremely rare to get hypos while taking it. I'm one of the very lucky few who managed to do that, but I was not low carbing at the time. They weren't life threatening, just dizzy making drops into the 60s. But I'm notorious for my wierd drug reactions. Metformin is often prescribed for people with PCOS along with low carbing, so I wouldn't worry about it. Supposedly most people taking metformin experience weight loss. Whether this is because of the initial stomach upset is not known. It does, supposedly go away for most people. I didn't get that sypmptom. The one other odd side side effect I also got wit metformin was chest pains that were worrying. They made me think of heart attack but weren't. The endocrinologist told me that they are a "known side effect." I think they are actually some kind of spasm of the stomach or esophagus. They went away when I stopped the drug. -- Jenny Cut the carbs to respond to my new email address!
