Starting at 305 lbs, I'm dieting for the first time in my life. At 6'4",
I'm setting my goal weight at 220-230.

I'm pretty sure that 2000/day is a good goal. I'm feeling well fed and
energetic.

I've also started exercising, over the past two weeks working my way up to
30 minutes/day on the eliptical machine, about 10 minutes of stretching. I
also throw in pushups and crunches just before the cool down.

Every other day, I also add 2 sets of 20 curls and 2 sets of 20 presses
with my 20 lb dumbells.

Today I weighed 297, a loss of 8 lbs. Is loosing weight that quickly
healthy?

Also, without additional cost, what are some things I can do to assist in my
strength training?

Thanks,

D-

It's not unusual to lose quickly when you first start a weight loss
program. It's usually a lot of water and the rate should taper off in a
few weeks.

Here's a site that has excellent information regarding weight training.
http://www.stumptuous.com/weights.html
I know it's geared toward women but the information is great and Krista
sometimes posts in the newgroup.

You're off to a great start. Hope to see you posting your progress often.

Hi
I missed how long you've been dieting. Typically, the
recommendation is if you're losing 1-2 pounds a week you
probably aren't risking your health.

Don't concentrate on strength training. You need aerobics
like walking to be heart healthy. The American Heart
Association web site has stories about people who had
heart attacks as a result of not doing aerobic exercise but
only strength training.

It's not just the calories, it's the content. Healthy eating
habits are high-fiber (30 gms a day) low-fat (less than 30%
of calories). Make sure most of your calories come from
fruit, veg, whole grains (whole wheat, brown rice, etc.),
legumes (dried beans/split peas/lentils) with enough animal
products to fill out your vitamin and mineral needs. Cut
back on fish-and-chips and crisps. Also alcohol is empty
calories and more than one serving a day (less than a pint
of beer ale or stout) is not good for your health.

The heavier you are, the faster you loose the weight at first. I don't
think that the 4 lbs a week are too much at this point. Are you drinking a
ton of water? That helps you lose weight even more. I would also suggest
adding walking to your routine. That is the easiest way to get into
cardivascular shape.... Good luck.

do a full-body workout like this one:
http://www.stumptuous.com/program8.html

or create your own from the exercises listed at:
http://www.exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html

other than that, your plan looks good to me

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. For those who are
curious, I have been dieting for two weeks. I had been flirting with 300
lbs for some time, then went to Italy for 2 weeks, and came back over 300,
that was the deciding factor.

I'm amazed at how much food you can eat, and keep your calories relatively
low. I've eaten four solid meals today, and am still well below my target
for the day - 2000. What I have eaten today is the equivalent of 1
McDonalds breakfast for me...

The eliptical machine is aerobic, I'm keeping my pulse between 160 and 180
for the 30 minutes that I'm on the machine. Next week I'm probably going to
increase my time.

Picked up a new sport today as well, Inline Skating Interestingly
enough, I didn't hurt myself while on the skates...instead I managed to do
it while I was putting them on.
