A week ago was 260/248/200. Now 260/246/200. I've stayed away from
the beer this week, eaten well, been walking 5 miles a day and am
feeling good. Let's keep it going!

Three months in you've had time to internalize the
fact that the ideal rate of loss to keep it off is
4 per month. Faster tends to happen on fad diets
where the regains are more common. Twice the ideal
rate does *not* qualify with the word slowly once.
It isn't in the same league as the word slowly
twice.

Yes. Excellent progress resulting from excellent
actions.

Thanks - well, ok, you're right: losing 2 pounds a week is probably a
bit faster than ideal (isn't it generally said that you shouldn't aim
to lose more than about 1 pound per week?). However I would think
anybody's weight would fluctuate a little from day to day anyway so I'm
not reading too much into just two data points - but it's nice to know
that I seem to be heading in the right direction - and I'm pleased that
I've bitten the bullet & overcome my phobia of bathroom scales.

Best wishes.
Alan.

WOW! 5 miles a day! I applaud you. Thats a great walk Alan. I thought
I was doing good with 2 or 3 miles a day. I have been taking off during
the morning after I get my daughter off to school. I walk until I am
tired, go to a bus stop and take public transit home. It is easier for
me to do than say I will walk to point X and back. I dont know if I am
fast but when I go to track my mileage and time later I have been
walking 3 miles an hour.

Thanks - but it's no big deal really! I live in Central London and I
only live two and a half miles from my office in The City (the
financial district), so it seemed like a good idea to walk to work in
the morning & home again in the evening. Takes 40-45 minutes each way,
which - believe it or not - is only about 10 minutes slower than taking
the bus (yes, the traffic in London is every bit as bad as you would
imagine). It's a nice walk as well - the quickest route is also the
quietest, so I can spend most of the time walking along quiet "olde
worlde" cobbled streets with almost no traffic (rather than having
buses and lorries thundering past me).

I should have done this a long time ago! I guess my shoe leather will
wear out a bit quicker but then I'll save $3 a day on bus fares so I
guess it's six of one, half a dozen of the other.

I might change my mind come January if we get a spell of cold grey
windy weather; but for the time being it's fine!

Funny how no one ever seems to complain that they are
losing faster than the ideal rate. ;^)

(isn't it generally said that you shouldn't aim
to lose more than about 1 pound per week?).

Sure but the time scale for loss can't be week-to-week
so I always phrase it as 4 per month. It's only a
rate of 1 per week after being averaged across a few
months, not any similarity at all to one each and
every week.

However I would think
anybody's weight would fluctuate a little from day to day anyway so I'm
not reading too much into just two data points

Water fluctuation is noise added to the signal.
It is important the view the trend not any one data
point. Try to derive meaning from any pair of data
points closer together than a month and it's far
too likely to be swamped by noise. Weighings on
two consequative days are almost guaranteed to reveal
signal noise not signal meaning.

but it's nice to know
that I seem to be heading in the right direction - and I'm pleased that
I've bitten the bullet & overcome my phobia of bathroom scales.

Eventually it is necessary to overcome that phobia.
Early on weekly weighings make sense to the extend
the phobia still exists. By the time you are preparing
for the transistion to maintenance the phobia needs to
be removed because then daily weighings become important.
It becomes necessary to know the size of your water
rentention swing then and that takes daily weighings for
a while, but early on you don't need to know the size of
the swing just it's existance. Context and perspective.

Ohhh..... taking my hits I guess LOL. Larrys dad died the 10th. We were
scheduled for a flight out to Cancun mid Nov. for a weeks vacation with
11 family members. Larrys sister was going to get married at the base
of some Mayan ruins then of course the hurricane hit. The place is
devastated. Our hotel had a swimming pool but it is now a salt water
pool if you know what I mean. The flights are cancelled in and out. The
windows have been blown out of buildings, trees are down, no phones,
and no power. We had non refundable tickets and best we get is a
voucher for a later flight. SO now we are trying to get a flight to
Puerto Vallarta instead. What a mess!
