You're right. My beloved spaghetti was so much cheaper than all the meat
required by Atkins
And in my case it's even worse. I am allergic to the antibiotics they use in
poultry and livestock so I have to buy all my meat at a healthfood store
where where it's labled "raised without the use of antibiotics" and it's
even more expensive. On top of that the "health nuts" boast about eveything
being "low fat"! The beef is dry, dry, dry! So I end up having to lay on
the olive oil to bring the meat up to "specs". And specialty meats like
sausages, spam, corned beef etc are out because I dont know how the animals
used were raised and I can't risk eating it. Also off my list of edibles are
any fish that are farmed rather than caught wild because farmed fish are
also raised using the same antibiotics I'm sensitive to

Eggs are your friends. Cheap and lots of good stuff in them.

My husband and I spend less money on food now then we did before LC.
Besides not buying cookies, snacks, fast food, etc., we've figured out
a system for shopping.

Look for sales on off-size pork steaks and chops, three-pound and
larger chubs of ground beef, chicken (whole or parts, "family size"
packs) -- all this stuff saves money. Bacon costs less by the
three-pound package than by the one-pound package, usually. Buy a big
pack of something at a low per-pound price, repackage it in smaller
Ziplocs, freeze. It seems expensive when you make the initial
investment, but it's cheaper over the weeks to follow.

Look for "big lot" stores or wholesale grocers. Dairy, meat and stuff
like SF syrups will cost less there. I buy prepared salad by the 5 lb.
bag -- it's a little over 3 bucks, compared to $1.99 for 6 oz. bags of
salad at the grocery store. Yeah, some of it ends up in the compost
bin, but it's still way cheaper.

Eggs, tuna, chicken -- these are inexpensive. Pork and chicken can be
found on sale all the time. We often feed our desire for beef by
getting a big 7-bone chuck roast or brisket, cooking it on the
barbecue grill and slicing it thin. As good as steak, much cheaper,
and you have leftovers.

You just have to plan and shop smart. Steer clear of expensive cuts of
meat and gimmicky prepared low-carb products -- you don't need Atkins
bars or $5 loaves of special bread or expensive low-carb muffin mixes.
Figure out what you like to eat, how often you eat it, and shop
accordingly.

Really? I've been buying blade steaks at Whole Foods, in part
because they are pretty small and not very expensive. They are
anything BUT dry. And the label states no antibiotics or
hormones have been used.

I dont doubt the "goods" are out there somewhee. But in my area the brands
available sans antibiotics are the standard "low fat" "good for you" stuff
which by definition is going to be dry.

Price....? I'll admit the chicken here is comparable to normal chicken but
there is still a lot of stuff meat and fish-wise that's off limits. Makes
this Atkins much more challenging

First, It's important to realize that you don't need low carb marketed shakes,
bars, snacks, breads, mixes, etc.
Cutting those out of my diet has not only saved me money but increased my
success as a low carber.
The second thing to realize is that fat is not a big issue. This diet allows
for fattier cuts of meat. Cheaper burger meat is fine. Chicken legs, wings,
backs are fine. I think the last time I bought chicken legs they were 59 cents
a pound. Low carb doesn't mean you have to eat steaks for every meal.
(Unless, you want to and can afford it.)
You no longer need to buy chips, various junk foods, sodas, sauces, etc. After
you get yourself further into low carbing you may realize that you just don't
have the appetite that you did the first few months. Eating less is far more
satisfying.
As for shopping: Buy in bulk. In my area going to a major food chain on
Thursday night is a good deal. Meets are marked down. Next time you are in
your food store ask the butcher when meets are reduced. The same in the veggie
isle.
When food shopping stay out of the middle of the store. Most food stores are
set up w/ everything a low carber needs on the outside isles. I rarely enter
into carb heaven. (my nick for the main shopping area of a food store)
Find restaurant supply stores. I like GFS.
Forget salad in bags ... buy some real greens and take the 2 minutes and wash
and chop them yourself.
Because cooking low carb is so simple you may find yourself not wanting or
needing to go out to eat as often, or not at all.
Take your lunch to work.
Keep it simple.
Best of luck,
~Kat

Well, this is what I do:

1) Eat real food and skip most of the high-priced "low carb" foods.

2) Got a freezer so I could take advantage buying larger quantities of
meat and fish when it's on sale. Watch the sales flyers for good
sales. For example, Fred Meyer was advertising whole chickens for
47¢/lb. I hardly ever go in there, but I went in and bought a
half-dozen whole chickens at that price. I also recently got 10 lbs.
of breakfast sausage links for $12.90 from a local market.

3) I eat a lot of eggs, canned tuna, chicken. Stuff like t-bone steak
and lobster are treats, not everyday eats.

4) Buy stuff in bulk that won't spoil much cheaper from a warehouse
store like Sam's Club or Costco--I get stuff like nuts, beef jerky,
larger jars of mayonnaise, etc.

I really don't find this way of eating to be any more expensive than
the way I used to eat.

I absolutely agree. I shop at Sam's Club once a month, buy meat cheap in
bulk and freeze it. I save tons of money by not eating all the junk food in
between meals that I used to. It's the chips and ice cream and cookies,
etc. -- not to mention fast food several times a week -- that added up, not
the meat! And the vegetables are cheap and go a long way.
