Atkins adds carbs over time.

The basis of Atkins is that you tailor the plan to your body's needs. I
don't see anywhere that it forces you to eat a certain amount of fat. I
thought that gout was affected by too much purine, not fat, and the fat will
not raise your cholesterol, it's the heavy duty carbs that do. Besides
which the cholesterol thing is a lot of hooey.

fat.
| Atkins induction and South Beach phase 1 are practically identical except
for
| fat limitations and a few more permissible carby vegetables on South
Beach. For
| instance, although fruit is forbidden, beans are not.

I rememberr the fad. It came and went as expected. Entirely
predictable. But I started low carbing 1999-06-21 well before
the fad and there were bursts of posters back then. It can't
be about the fad coming and going.

I find that surprising.

I think the low-carb fad is over. *Most people I know have given it up.

I just went on google and looked at the traffic history of all of
the groups under alt.support.diet.*. They all show a gradual
drop in traffic year to year, no burst of traffic in January but
some in Febuary. The only one that showed an increase in
traffic Dec to Jan was the Weight Watchers on. Looks like
it's more about new posters posting in places other than
UseNet not about low carb itself.

I think you're right, Doug. I don't think most people even *know*
about Usenet anymore. I have yet to meet anyone in RL who even knows
what newsgroups are. That's not saying much -- but it's just as
telling as the fact that no one else I know does LC, either. Of
course, I ask them about the newsgroups. I don't ask them about LC.
:-D

A number of big Internet Service Providers dropped a huge number of
newsgroups last year. In particular the "alt" groups were dropped
completely by these ISPs. If memory serves they were just going to
keep "The Big 8" groups.

But yes, blogs (MySpace, FaceBook, Live Journal, etc.) have drawn a
significant chunk of the writing that used to go to newsgroups.
