6 weeks to lose a stone
I need to lose between 14lb - 20lb within roughly 6 weeks. At the moment, I
have a really hectic personal and business life and so don't have hours on end to work out. In about 4 weeks time though, I will have a lot more time to exercise etc.... Anybody got any good suggestions to help me? I tried the Atkins however it made me really depressed and irritable. The weightloss does not need to be long term, however I would like to try and keep it off. Anybody tell me what I should be cutting down on? What supplements can I take to substitute for missing bits? etc etc??? Thanks |

I need to lose between 14lb - 20lb within roughly 6 weeks. Reduce your daily calorie intake by 1000-1500 kcal per day. That's a very dramatic reduction in calories, though, so don't expect to succeed. And don't go below 1200 kcal per day total for long periods. In general, one does not drop 20 pounds in six weeks for a special occasion, one adopts an eating style that provides the number of calories required to maintain an ideal weight, and any excess weight drops away automatically. Such a lifestyle must be maintained for life. At the moment, I have a really hectic personal and business life and so don't have hours on end to work out. In about 4 weeks time though, I will have a lot more time to exercise etc.... Eat less and exercise more. Be advised that it takes a _lot_ of exercise to burn 1000 or 1500 kcal per day (15-20 kilometres of walking, for example). Anybody got any good suggestions to help me? I tried the Atkins however it made me really depressed and irritable. Eat less and exercise more. What you eat isn't important, as long as you reduced total calories. The weightloss does not need to be long term, however I would like to try and keep it off. You will not be able to keep it off with the haphazard approach that you seem to with to undertake. Instead, you'll ultimately gain weight again as you resume overeating and stop exercising, and you may even end up heavier than you were before. Anybody tell me what I should be cutting down on? Everything. What supplements can I take to substitute for missing bits? You don't need any for a balanced diet of 1200 kcal total or more. Below that, multiple vitamins and possibly other supplements. But don't go below 1200 kcal in the first place. -- Transpose hotmail and mxsmanic in my e-mail address to reach me directly. |

6 weeks to lose a stone
Do you want to put the weight back on after the six weeks are over?
If not (it would be unhealthy for you if you did) then you have to Start a permanent program. Like I said, start working out and build Up to a 30 minute work out every day. Eat right, don't take supplements. Supplements don't work as well as a proper diet for some nutrients, According to clinical studies. Examples are anti-oxidants and fiber. This is exactly what you should NOT be doing.
You can't keep it up, even the manic admits that, and so you will put the weight back on. "Mxsmanic" wrote in message ... 6 weeks to lose a stone
Here's the scenario.
I currently weigh 13st and am 5ft9. Therefore my BMI is roughly 29 or so. I am applying to join the police force and so need to bring my BMI down to between 20-25. My BMI will be measured only once and I am not too sure when that is. It will be measured sometime within the next few months, but could be as soon as in 6 wks time or in 20 wks time. I could probably try and go jogging once or twice a week, however I am not all that fit as yet and so would have to start off gently for now! Tips welcome please! |

At 5'9" and 13 stones (182 pounds) your BMI is 26.9 - you're not as high as you thinkg You will need to get to 169 to hit the 25 mark. That's a little over 2 pounds per week to lose the 13 pounds. This is a very doable weight loss and almost within the suggested weight loss rate of 1-2 pounds per week. You will need to count calories, drink plenty of water and exercise during this period. Start tracking your daily food intake. Be sure you're eating a balanced diet of protein, carbs and fat. The carbs should come from whole grains, fruits, vegetables, etc. The fat should be healthy fats such as olive oil, flax, etc. Walking is a great exercise for losing weight and something you can try to fit into your daily schedule. Many in the group suggest 10 x current weight as the calorie level for losing weight (182 x 10 = 1820 in your case). You could probably cut back to the 1300-1500 range and still maintain a healthy diet. In order to maintain the weight loss you'll need to stick to the exercise and a healthy diet. It's often hard to lose weight when we set a schedule as the weight has a mind of its owng Good luck and keep reading and posting. You'll find lots of information here. Beverly |

As Beverly has stated, your current BMI is around 26.9. That's assuming you are correctly stating your weight at 13 stone and a height of 5' 9". 13 stone = 182 pounds. Therefore, you would need to get to 169 pounds or less in no less than 6 weeks (May 17th). Assuming you have a normal metabolism, you need to average a net intake of roughly 1,400 calories per day. It means eating about 1,000 calories less than required to maintain your current weight. Adding exercise will allow you to eat more and/or lose weight faster. This might be a good idea, since you don't want to weigh exaclty 169, then go in and get weighed slightly higher just because of a normal daily weight fluctuation. I'd shoot for 165 to play it safe. 6 weeks to lose a stone
Is your current weight your *normal* one? That is, is it a weight you have
been stable at for years or not? If it is your normal weight, you will be fighting against your natural set-point, which is always harder (your body will fight back with hunger). If not, you should have a much easier time, since your body chemistry will actually want to go the same way as you do. Actually, if your current weight is above your normal one, you are over-eating and going above your hunger. What is your current lean mass (are you out of shape? do you have muscles?)? Have you done a lot of diets (the more, the harder to lose weight)? You don't really *need* to "work-out". You just need to have some activity level higher than sitting on a chair. The problem is to send a clear signal to your body so that it doesn't adjust to the deficit in energy by reducing your metabolism, but by taxing your resources (your fat) instead. Just walking out daily, something like 30 minutes, even non-continuously, might be enough for that. It won't burn that many calories (roughly 300ish), but at least that should let your body know that you do indeed have a use for your muscles For short term weight loss, you could do a protein diet. They do work very well for short term loss, though you WILL be hungry and the lost pounds WILL come back when you drop out of the diet (often with some extras as well). If you're heading for long term, just eat whatever you do usually, but in smaller sizes. If you're above your normal weight, just stopping when you're not hungry anymore might actually work well, though a bit too slow for you. The *only* real way to lose weight is to create a deficit between your intakes (what you eat) and your output (what you burn daily). So, whatever you do, you will either have to eat less or exercice more - or, better, do both. There is no magic regime that will change anything there. Most of the magic regimes just trick you into eating less while you think you're eating more. They can do that by making you eat the same bland food all day long (whatever works : pasta, banana, French fries...), by making you eat unappalling meals (by dissociating them for instance), by using cetonic corpses (Aktins), by filling your stomach until you cannot physically put more food in there (surgery, high fiber diets, eat-as-many-greens-as-you-can diets)... The trick works on your upper brain (and wallet), but it doesn't work long term on your lower brain, the one that controls hunger and has access to your body variables. Which is why your weight usually skyrockets back to its initial value as soon as you stop the diet, since you also stop whatever trick was used to keep your hunger away. In an event like this one, it is possible to do what many sport professionnals do in disciplines where there is a weight limit. You can always lose the last couple of pounds (3-4 max) by cheating and going through a *short* (and *moderate*) dehydratation period. That's not something I would recommend long term, but on a single event like this it shouldn't hurt you too much if you stay reasonnable (keyword : reasonnable). Just have a blood or urine test beforehand to check that you have properly working kidneys, dehydratation is not something you want if you don't. "That's Confidential" wrote in message ...
