Low Carb for Endurance Sports
Hello,
I successfully acheived my goal of losing 25 pounds and great blood chemistry. Now trying to train for a mini triathlon. Here's my problem though: I don't have enough energy to do any sustained training such as running and swimming for distance ... feel very sluggish and muscles burn. I tried upping my carbs to 100g, but still same effect. If I load up on carbs, I'm ok ... but I dont want to reverse my great blood chemistry improvement. Is it possible to do endurance sports on a low carb diet? |

Yeah , cheeseburgers wrapped in bacon will make you an Ironman. How much more
stupid can people be with Atkins on the brain . |

I can't imagine doing any serious endurance work on low carb because of
exactly what you state: sluggishness, muscle burn, and overall fatigue. What you can do is figure out exactly how many carbs you need for peak performance, and ingest them before you train and race. -- Eat less, exercise more. -- MFW -- "OverTheHill" wrote in message ... I carb up a little the night before a long run but restrict on normal
exercise days. I define long runs as 8 miles or more. On a ordinary day of doing my normal 5 or so or light to moderate weight training low carb, 40g a day or less, does not pose a problem as energy is sufficient. I had an issue with my blood sugar crashing when doing long runs.
Jennie sugguest eating 5 smarties before my run. Doing this has helped tremenodously. No more low feelings during the run. Those 5 smarties get me through about 6km or so. Just an idea. Muscles burning sounds like lactic acid build up. That suggests you need more training to improve that. Weight lifting is good in general but so is sport specific training. When I low carb for extended periods of time, combined with even a moderate volume of exercise, and get down towards the lower end of bodyfat percentages, I fall into a condition that could be described as "muscle burn". This is not lactic acid buildup (I'm very well acquainted with that condition) but rather a burning sensation that can occur when just sitting around and reaching for a glass of water, for example. This was, and still is, the reason for the formation and use of the CKD and/or TKD. If you ever get down to a lower bodyfat%, you'll probably know what I mean. |
