"Bob" wrote in message ... I've started going swimming most mornings before work, but im struggling with breakfast food. I cant eat breakfast before I go swimming as im getting up early enough to get swimming before work. I'm after something easy to eat after I swim and before I go to work. Something that doesnt need utensils, bowls, etc ... i'm thinking some sort of shake maybe? I'm trying to maintain a calorie controlled diet with roughly the following:- 500 cals breakfast 100 cals snack 800 cals lunch 100 cals snack 1000 cals evening meal 2500 cals total for each day, less any added exercise. I keep everything varied and fairly balanced with various salads, whole grains, fruit and vegetables. It seems to be right for me as I lose weight on this and dont feel hungry but with the swimming now my breakfast routine is thrown out of whack. I've heard talk of protein shakes ... would that give me a 500 cal quality nutitional breakfast? - Recommendations please? (UK based) I don't think a 500 calorie shake is the way to go here. Most shakes I've used (US based) are between 100-250 calories. Is it possible for you to eat once you get to work? What I do in the morning is have a 100 calorie shake on my way out the door to work. Later on in the morning when I get a break at work, I heat up something for breakfast - usually a piece of a frittata (omlette) that I bring to work (made the night before) and eat that. Another quick, portable breakfast I have is slices of turkey breast lunch meat with a light spread of cream cheese and hummus. I roll them up, put them in a ziploc bag and take them along. It's possible to stuff a whole wheat pita with some meat, cheese, and veggies and have that as a quick breakfast too. Mostly the secret to a good, quick breakfast is planning. -- the volleyballchick absolutely NOT a morning person |

I need an easy morning breakfast after exercise

Here's an article on "breifcase breakfasts" that might give you some ideas. http://my.webmd.com/content/article/...?printing=true I fix oatmeal at work most mornings. Is fixing something at work an option? When doing an early morning bike ride with no time to fix anything beforehand I usually carry a banana and energy bar for breakfast. In article , ignoramus13333 says... How about three scrambled eggs, a big salad without dressing (tomatoes provide their own juice), and 100 grams of turkey breast. Should be about 500 cals. i I know I wont prepare it .... also means knives, forks, plate or sandwich box ... and its not the sort of thing id usually eat for breakfast. I used to eat whole grain cereal and milk - that was fine and quick, no problem but now im getting up 1.5 hours before I would normally and going swimming. I dont want any hassle/mess to sort out hence thinking about some sort of shake ... I just know I wont follow it if I end up having to prepare some sort of light meal. It's not hard to carry cereal and milk with you. Just put the cereal in a plastic bowl with a cover, put the milk in another covered plastic container, and toss these (and a spoon) into a small insulated bag. Then you can have your cereal after you swim. A protein shake would work, too, though I don't know that there are too many with 500 calories unless you add some fruit or something. Maybe take a shake and a piece of fruit or two? Chris 262/130s/130s started dieting July 2002, maintaining since June 2004 |

I sometimes make a couple of days' worth of slow-cooking oatmeal, then
microwave it in the morning. Then mix in some chopped nuts and sometimes chopped dried fruits. Or else I have some quick sandwiches and maybe a kiwi fruit. |

(UK based) You could buy protein bars, or a protein bar & a shake, since neither will provide 500 cals by itself. Check out Holland & Barrett. Alternatively, the Boots Shapers line is quite extensive and growing, all the stuff is packaged and ready to eat straight out of the box and any cutlery required will either be in the box or available at the till. |

(UK based) Mix cheerios, almonds, and soy nuts or peanuts if you're not allergic. Crunchy, complete protein, lots of fiber, tastes ok, you can add raisins if you like a little sweet. Very good for your cholesterol. |

I've heard talk of protein shakes ... would that give me a 500 cal quality nutitional breakfast? - Recommendations please? (UK based) As has been previously mentioned, most MRP shakes are far less than 500 calories. If you want to use only one shake that can be mixed in water after swimming, ask for something called (in the US anyhow) a "weight gainer" shake. Some of them have 900+ calories for a 16oz serving. Or, possibly you could mix one of the more traditional MRP shakes with milk or fruit juice but this would require carrying this additional beverage and probably keeping it cool as well. I understand the problem of not being able to eat a proper meal before swimming, but it makes sense to have at least some water and some sort of high-glycemic carb before your workout. Perhaps fruit or a Gatorade type beverage. Matthew |

I do the oatmeal thing at work too but I would also like to suggest that rather than buying the Morningstar Farms breakfast sandwich things, just make them yourself. Pepperidge Farms 100% whole wheat English Muffin (130 cals, 26 carbs (3 fiber), 6 protein, .5 fat) poached egg (make ahead) (75 cals, 5 fat, 1 carb, 6 protein) Veggie sausage if you like, boca burger breakfast patty (80 cals, 4 fat, 5 carb (3 fiber), 8 protein) Cheese if you like. w/o cheese = 285 cals Pop in microwave if possible. Also, you could use a bagel instead of an English muffin (Sara Lee Delightful 100% whole wheat, 130 cals, 1 fat, 24 carb (7 fiber), 10 protein) -- jmk in NC |
