How many people here have tried Toastmasters Speaking Club?
How many people have tried Toastmasters Speaking Club?
This is an international non-profit club with over 200,000 members world wide and it is intersted in only one thing -- making people better speakers. People are assigned a variety of duties in Toastmasters, including giving a prepared speech, evaluating speeches, hosting the meeting, speaking extemporaneously, etc., etc. Along the way, they often lose (or greartly curtail) their self- consciousness and they have a great time! There's a heck of a lot of praise, a lot of laughter, good times. If you're interested in attending their meetings, please check at http://toastmasters.org/ to find a club near you. They are free to attend for the first few sessions (and cost about 40 dollars each six months thereafter). In terms of weight loss, I think Toastmasters might be really helpful because the training helps you to continue on with your program even if many others are trying to get you to change. One has to be able to resist easy panaceas to change one's behavior over time. Also, self- consciousness might keep you away from the jogging path or the athletic club, so why not get rid of it? About the nicest people in the world are in Toastmasters. Oregon even has about 5 clubs within the prison systems and this has resulted in substantial reductions in the recidivism rate. I met my wife in Toastmasters 32 years ago (my poor, poor, better half!) and both of us appreciate how so many people would benefit if they participated in Toastmasters too. This is perhaps the best, most effetive organization I have ever been a part of. Give it a try! You'll be pleased you did! Yours truly, Caleb |

How many people here have tried Toastmasters Speaking Club?
Actually am a member of a local Toastmasters group. Found them on the web after people had been constantly telling me I should go out and speak about my weightloss. It has helped me tremendously with my confidence and coming up with my own speaking style. So far I have achieved an CC designation and I am almost finished with the coursework for my ATM-B designation. All of this in a little over a year with them... People have mentioned this program and the Dale Carnegie program ($1500 4 week course) - I like this one because it's cheap and gives me the opportunity to continually practice and recieve honest feedback. A saying our club has adopted goes, "We flub in the club so that we can be sweet on the street..." Matty 510/254/210 (starting weight/current weight/goal weight) New Mini-Goals! Mini-Goal #1 - get my morning jog up 4.8mi by 03/31/07 Mini-Goal #2 - 300lbs total lost by 08/31/07 |

Yesterday we said, "What happens in Toastmasters STAYS in Toastmasters" but I like your saying better. I'll pass it on. Don't you think that Toastmasters allows you to do deal more effectively with criticism from others? Yours truly, Caleb |

I was never a shy public speaker, but really enjoyed the extemporaneous stuff. It also helped me really developed my ability to listen well -- perhaps the biggest benefit for me. I never connected it to weight loss, though -- don't think there was any association there for me. Chris 262/130s/130s started dieting July 2002, maintaining since June 2004 |

At least needless social fears don't hold people back. And Table Topics is a lot of fun. (For those who haven't tried Toastmasters, Table Topics is extemporaneous speaking where one is suddenly given a topic to speak on for a minute and a half. Good practice for the real world.) Yours, Caleb Keep up the good work! |
