Good news for Canadian low-carbers!
For you Canucks out there - Sleeman's Breweries has a low carb beer
available in Canada. It's called Sleeman's Clear and is only 2.5 grams of carbs per bottle. It's 4% alcohol, and 90 calories. I tried it yesterday and it's pretty good. It's not as good as Sleeman's Honey Brown but nothing really is. It's WAY better than nothing at all. Has a little bit of a light beer aftertaste but it's still good. If you normally drink light beer (I don't) you'll probably love it. Beer is what I miss the most on this diet and this stuff makes life good again. -- BeerBoy |

Good news for Canadian low-carbers!
Unfortunately for those of us NOT in the Center of the Universe (Ontario),
Sleeman's Clear is still only available in a regional market. However, Labatt has released Sterling, their new low-carb beer throughout much of Canada. Personally, my choice is still Gusiness. Yum! Todd. News release from www.labatt.ca: With only 2.5 grams of carbohydrates and 88 calories per 341 ml bottle, Labatt Sterling is one of the lowest calorie beers on the market. Premium domestic beers only have between 11 and 17 grams of carbohydrates and 130 to 145 calories per 341 ml bottle and most light beers contain between six to nine grams of carbohydrates and approximately 110 calories. "This is our early holiday gift to beer drinkers," says Nigel Miller, director of public affairs for Labatt Breweries of Canada. "We're launching Labatt Sterling to appeal to the growing number of people who are looking for a beer that fits their lifestyle, but who are also looking for something that tastes great and won't compromise their New Year's resolutions." Labatt Sterling launches at a time when people are migrating to lower-carbohydrate lifestyles in an effort to control their weight. The rapid adoption of these lifestyles has been fueled by the popularity of programs such as The Zone, Sugar Busters and the well-known Atkins diet which advocate lower-carb choices and which countless millions have tried. "'Low-carb' is definitely the new buzzword and people who are health-conscious are choosing lifestyles that fit this trend," said Roland Semprie, co-owner of Totumlifescience, a Toronto-based fitness, health and lifestyle management company. "But, heading into the holidays when we all tend to indulge, it's important for people to monitor their intake of more than just breads and pasta. The fact is, festive drinks are full of carbs and calories and can really contribute to holiday weight gain." "Just because a drink has a light taste or is made with natural ingredients, it doesn't necessarily mean it's better for you," continues Semprie, a fitness specialist. "People need to be smart about the choices they're making - a rum and egg nog or cosmopolitan will have you on the treadmill much longer than a lower-carb beer will." Labatt Sterling will be available in Ontario beginning on Nov. 24, in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, PEI and Newfoundland by early December and in New Brunswick and Quebec in early January. Priced the same as domestic specialty beers, Labatt Sterling will be introduced in innovative open-basket six-packs of bottles that can be purchased as a single six-pack or four packed together as a 2-4. I live in St. Albert (Alberta), and many liquor stores here have it now. I haven't tried the Sterling yet, but Sleeman is quite good....if you like crisp, light tasting beers. GT |
