If your weight is a major problem, can you talk to your MD about trying another med, one which doesn't have weight gain as a side-effect? Priscilla |

Elavil is mostly taken now an anti-nerve pain medication, not for its
antidepressant qualities. The SSRIs don't relieve nerve pain while Elavil does. If you are taking elavil for nerve pain all I can think if is to see if there is another way to heal the cause of the nerve pain rather than numb it with a drug. If it is diabetic neuropathy, prolonged blood sugar control (keeping post meal numbers under 140 at all times) can relieve and often reverse it. For other conditions like Interstitial Cystitis, for which Elavil is prescribed, it's trickier, but there are some newer treatments worth checking out. -- Jenny - Low Carbing for 4 years. How do you do it? Cut carbs more? Cut calories? Elavil is HORRIBLE if you are trying to lose weight (one of the more prevalent side-effects is a pronouced sweet-tooth and overall increase in appetite). I recommend switching to an SSRI such as Zoloft. -- Saffire 205/152/125 - 5'1.5" Atkins since 6/14/03 Progress photo: http://photos.yahoo.com/saffire333 |

Migraine prevention is another use for Elavil, and SSRIs can be useful with that. Also beta blockers. I wouldn't write it off as an anti-depressant, though. There are people who don't respond to other meds who find Elavil helpful. Priscilla |

Neurontin is also used for diabetic neuropathy, along with several other maladies. It's also an excellent mood stabilizer for many people, but not all. I'm not familiar with the condition you're taking Elavil for, but I'm glad you're having such good results. As for the sweet tooth, I can satisfy mine with a 1/2 cup of jello with a tablespoon of cream poured on top. I just have to remember to make it so it's available when I want it. Sue's chocolate omelette is also nice. I had one for breakfast this morning. With raspberry-cream cheese filling. Best wishes to you!
