Default Fad diets - sort of ot

So I'm looking up stuff online and I happen upon a diet site. The site lists
Atkins and lc in general as fad diets. My question is how much weight do we
have to lose for "others" to stop referring to it as a fad diet??? LC is not
new. It's been around for a while now. I've personally seen success with LC.
I haven't seen success with the grapefruit diet, the cabbage soup diet,
etc... those are fad diets.

I've seen morbidly obese people refer to it as a fad diet. What they really
need is a fad-five program.

Heh. When you think about our "normal" diet of the past 40 years or
so, doesn't "eating healthy foods" sound like a fad?! G

When you hear noise like this, conisder the source. There are a lot of
big-money industries that are desperate to keep this WOE from catching
on. The vegan group has their own agenda, too (stop eating those poor
defenseless animals! Gimme a break. Certain animals are here for one
purpose - to fill a spot in the Food Chain!). These people will go to
any lengths to protect their income, including attempts at
brainwashing the unsuspecting public with barely disguised lies.

In regards to low carb, they keep the part that serves their purpose
and discard the rest. They realize that most people haven't read any
of the books and will readily believe that we subsist on nothing but
protein and fats. You'll notice that green vegetables and low-glycemic
fruits are never mentioned. nor the fact that carbs are gradually
increased over time. And I'll lay you odds it isn't because they are
ignorant of those facts. They are fully aware of their attempted
deceptions.

Have you ever seen so many groups get so up in arms over a "fad diet"
before? The grapefruit diet, the cabbage soup diet, or the cause of
the obesity epidemic: the low-fat diet? The media is full of their
squawking now for only one reason: they're getting hit where it hurts
- right square in their pocketbooks.

Heard on U.K. radio to-day " if we weren't
meant to eat animals, they wouldn't be made of meat" !!

In the strictest sense of the word, you could call lc a 'fad diet.'
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary says a fad is "a practice or interest
followed for a time with exaggerated zeal." So, yes, taking into account
the low carb frenzy (diet plans, low carb pre-processed foods, news
articles, etc.), low carb is a fad diet. But for those here who follow it
as a WOE or a change in lifestyle instead of a diet, it's not a fad (read: a
practice or interest followed FOR A TIME with exaggerated zeal.)

Yes, that's my sense of it. A diet that catches major public interest
for a period of time. And one can't deny that Atkins/low carb has
captured the public eye right now. I see new *low-carb* products on
the store and in restaurants practically every day.

It remains to be seen whether it will stay popular with the public,
who have often gotten entirely the wrong idea about the diet and
haven't read the book.

Bear in mind, one can also consider low-fat as a fad diet. Yet it too
can work for many people over the long haul.

I've even known folks who have used the cabbage soup diet as kind of a
maintenance diet. Whenever they tipped over 5 pounds or so over goal,
they'd go to the cabbage soup until they were back at goal. So from
that standard, even the cabbage soup diet can work for people.

Oddly, you never see a fad develop around a basic moderate,
common-sense diet. Just doesn't have the right catchy ring to it I
guess.

Low carb has actually been around for centuries. It's low-fat that's
the relative newcomer that was followed for a time with exaggerated zeal.
The only reason people don't see it as a fad is that it's a fad with
official government backing.

You're absolutely right. I'm old enough to have grown up with low carb, if you
wanted to lose weight. Cut down on starchy foods,
we were told and you'll lose weight, and we did.
The trouble is so many people have been brainwashed by the low fat lobby, 'cos
that's where the money is
