Ketosis and medications
I was in ketosis but have been out for the past few days when I began taking
a penicillin based antibiotic along with a pain pill. I have kept my carbs down to the same level they were before the medications began, and have remained at the same level of activity. Anyone know if the medications could have caused this? D.S. Donald |

OH OH OH I can answer THAT one! heh heh I just finished a course of meds - mine was Celflix - penicillin based .. I felt like I swallowed a watermelon whole .. EVERYTHING sat in my stomach ... And I gained back about 4 lbs in 2 days on this med and slowly climbed up for about 3 days. NOW the up side .. The discomfort of the meds went away after 2 - 3 days .. And I felt almost "normal" again .. Mine ran for 10 days and 3 days after those 10, I had like a 4 lb whoosh .. I didn't check to see if I was knocked out of ketosis while on these meds ... It didn't occur to me .. But they were evil things and I was well rid of them .. Persevere and you will be fine! Promise .. Just stick to your low carb .. Don't cheat, don't get the attitude that nothing else is working, might as well attitude .. You will only be shooting your own foot off Hope this helps .. I JUST went thru this .. http://fitday.com/WebFit/PublicJourn...wner=qiltkitty started on October 7th Heh .. Wasn't I supposed to go back to lurking??? Ketosis and medications
D.S.
It may not be the antibiotic. Having an infection can raise your blood sugar significantly. It's part of the mechanism the body uses to fight infection. In fact, people with diabetes can often tell that a cold is coming on because their blood sugars will go up the day or two before they start experiencing symptoms. Antibiotics have varying effects on blood sugar. When you are in ketosis, for example, Bactrim/Septra can cause you to experience unpleasantly low blood sugar. Do a search with Google for "prescribing information" for the antibiotic you are taking and read the package insert intended for doctors (the complicated one, usually in a .PDF file that has all the info about dosage, drug reactions, and how the medicine affects the body.) You'll often see hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia listed in the side effects section. That will tip you off that the drug itself messes with blood sugar. -- Jenny Weight: 168.5/137 Diabetes Type II diagnosed 8/1998 Low Carb 9/1998 - 8/2001 and 11/10/02 - Now http://www.geocities.com/jenny_the_bean How to calculate your need for protein * How much people really lose each month * Water Weight Gain & Loss * The "Two Gram Cure" for Hunger Cravings * Characteristics of Successful Dieters * Indispensible Low Carb Treats * Should You Count that Low Impact Carb? * Curing Ketobreath * Exercise Starting from Zero * NEW!
