Default renewed excitement about exercise

I have been getting into heavier weights and learning how to squat and
deadlift. This weekend I went out and bought a squat rack, an olympic
weight set and some rubber stall mats to protect my floor. Going to get a
bench today, and a set of dumbells. I've struggled to get to the gym 3 x
per week and have such limited time I can't do both cardio and weights. I
don't have a spare room or garage, so my living room is doing double-duty
now. I have exactly 12' x 8' of workout space...

So, I'm going to start getting up at 5 am (I'll be thinking of you jay jay)
to do my weights, and I'll go to the gym for cardio. I am determined to not
let the equipment become a clothing rack, since it's in my living
room...what will the company say?

You know I love weightlifting. I don't know what it is but I love feeling
that I am getting stronger and stronger even though it takes longer and
longer at my age. So, I am totally with you in your enthusiasm. BUT,
since I am sure you know you can have good lifting days and not so good
lifting days try to never lift alone in the house or don't use your clamps
if you lift at home and no one is around/or awake yet. Take it from me...a
weight you may have lifted before may conquer you on a weak day. One day in
the gym I merrily tried benching a weight I had no prior problem with so was
not worried about not having a spotter. Luckily, there was someone to help
me get the weight off my chest when I could not get the weight back up. At
the time, I was too stupid to not use the clamps when I was lifting alone,
so I could not just dump the weights off the end. Needless to say, whenever
I do weights near my limit without a spotter, I don't use clamps now. Have
fun and be safe. Elise (who is admittedly having trouble imagining someone
doing olympic style lifts in their living room..better put all your
breakables away).

Hope you have better luck than I had. I need to be at the gym with
other people to lift weights consistently. The free weight I bought
are gathering dust in my basement. Waking up at 5.00 am works for me
- nothing else to do at that time except go to the gym. I'm all
revved up this week after listening to Dr. Mirkin's online radio show
- quality, not quantity of exercise - especially for aerobic fitness.

Stop right there. Ain't gonna work. Odds are so far against this early
AM routine, it's not worth discussing.

The regular bars and plates -- if regulation size and weight -- are
called Olympic equipment. There isn't any necessary connection to
Olympic lifting. I don't think Determined is doing the Olympic lifts
(the snatch and clean & jerk), though I could be wrong. But I agree
that most people wouldn't be doing them in their living room :-).
(Sending the bar flying is not uncommon in these lifts.)

Powerlifting is more my interest - squats and dl's...
