Yoga & weight loss
Yoga is a good way to lose weight, but you really have to embrace the
whole system. The exercises themselves really act as a form of isometric weight bearing exercise, i.e. you use your muscles to hold your body in certain postures, and in doing so increase the muscle strength, density etc. However, experienced yoga practioners do much more than just perform the different postures. Really it should be a better way of life. You should consider a change to your diet (which is where most of the weight loss will actually come from) to practice yoga. To gain the most benefits from yoga, you need to be able to sustain the postures to allow you to breath correctly under relaxed conditions. If you are over weight, this will be difficult to attain for some postures, and therefore you may find that losing some weight will benefit your yoga. Generally a reduced meat, if not vegetarian diet, is good for yoga, and any other "energetic" art, i.e. tai chi, qiqong etc. It is always best to try to find an experience instructor to help your on your path. And do not simply trust the first instructor you meet - ask them about their experiences, where / when they learnt, make sure they are not a fraud before paying your hard earned cash in the hope of losing weight through yoga!
