I have no connection to PETA, but I do have a connection to my wife of
about 20 years. A woman who used to laugh, a woman who used to have
fun, and be fun to be around. A woman who was a few pounds
overweight, but it never bothered me. Then she got sucked into the
Atkins cult. Her once happy personality turned to sadness,
depression, and bitterness.

This all happened within a months time,
after she started on this diet. I ended up dreading coming home each
day, and having to face her obcession. I ended up eating at fast food
restaurants on a daily basis, because my wife who had been an
excellent cook, suddenly turned to cooking pure garbage, which I
refused to eat. Instead of going out on weekends for a few drinks,
she sat at home in her own self created misery, forcing me to go out
alone or with the neighbor. It was almost like my wife had forgotten
me, and married Atkins.

When I was with her, I could not kiss her anymore, because she smelled
badly as a result of this diet. Then, my once healthy wife started
getting sick on a regular basis, and was spending more time in the
hospital that at home. After draining our finances on medical care,
she still continued to follow the Atkins diet, until I finally gave
her the ultimatim. Either she quits this diet, or I would ask for a
divorce. She chose the diet, I chose the divorce.

I miss her greatly, but I miss the way she was before she got
brainwashed by the Atkins cult. I do not miss the later. I, with the
help of her doctors tried to get her into a mental health center to
deprogram her, but she refused all treatment. So, while I do miss my
beloved wife and the 19 years of good times we had, I do not miss the
last year of hell I spent with her. I married her for "better or
worse", and I tried to stick with her during the "worse", but she was
no longer the same person, and her compusion has destroyed everything
she was. I'd go back with her in a split second, if she was to go
back to her old self, but I know there is no longer any hope for her.
Yeah, she lost weight, but she also lost her spirit, lost her mind,
and lost herself. Because of that, I lost her.

If (and I strongly emphasize the word IF) this is even remotely true,
it sounds like she has more serious issues than diet. No diet has
that much power over normal people.

So you wonder why I came to this newsgroup?
Lets call it research.....

No, let's call it what it is, rage, plain and simple.

Snipage

I've learned a lot here. I've learned just how deeply this so called
"diet" is embedded and how cult like it really is. Above all, I've
learned that the physical damage from the Atkins diet is minor,
compared to the psychological damage. If a person died right in front
of your eyes, because of this diet, and a hundred doctors confirmed it
was the diet that caused the death, you people would still deny it was
the diet. I now know the pattern, first this diet takes away your
self worth, then it robs you of your laughter, then turns you into a
babbling idiot, followed by the physical illnesses, and finally death.
It's a very sad ordeal. The promoters of this Atkins diet should be
tried in the courts for the damage they are doing, and if I have
anything to say about it, THEY WILL.

Actually you came in spouting the same old garbage we're used to
fending off, and then some. Insulting us, calling us a "cult," and
"Babbling idiot", and so on. Is it any wonder we hit back as hard as
we could? In case you didn't notice, you are seriously outnumbered,
so you got roundly stomped by the home team. The golden rule very
much applies on the internet, "treat others as you would wish to be
treated." If you can't take it, don't dish it out. But you seem to
insist on learning the hard way.

For the few of you on here that still have your "mind", and have not
yet reached the psychological and mental damage, turn around and run
like hell. Take that Atkins book, and set it on fire. There are
other (safe) ways to diet that won't destroy you.

But what about Protein Power, South Beach, and the Zone diet? What
about Neanderthin? The Royal Airforce diet? Shouldn't they be
classed as evil too?

Speak to your
doctor, and find a REAL diet, or simply cut out the snacks and you
should be fine. So what if you're a few pounds overweight. Is it
worth destroying your health, your relationships and your entire life,
to lose a few pounds?

My doctor is well aware that I'm on a low carb diet. It's just fine
with her. (My old doctor, before he retired, actually danced into the
exam room he was so happy with my weight loss and bloodwork.) She's
very pleased with my progress, as well. I should give up the only
diet I've found that works because your ex had problems? I don't
think so, especially when my physician is standing my corner. (And,
no, I didn't interview her before I became her patient. I just lucked
out.)

The more I stick to my plan (notice I said MY PLAN? My plan, mine,
not anyone elses), the further I am from a cute little family trait I
don't want, DIABETES. (Got another tidbit for you, bucko, a lot of us
are doing this with our doctors' blessings.) If that makes me a
babbling idiot in your eyes, then so be it. I wasn't put on this
Earth to please you, and have no intention of pretending to try.

My husband's okay with low carb, too. He doesn't want me to be
diabetic either. (I guess he's not a big fan of watching people give
themselves insulin.) I cook great meals, there are carbs for him, and
low carb alternatives for me. For that matter, he cooks great meals,
too. There is no good reason anyone should have to have crummy food
on a low carb diet. There are few excuses for bad food on a low fat
diet, for that matter. I know, I have to cook for both.

Thanks to everyone for proving to me just how badly the Atkins diet
causes psychological damage, and how cultish this diet truely is.

Thank *you* ever so much for charging in here like a bull in china
shop. This is alt.support.diet.low-carb, so you've been ****ing off a
lot of low carb dieters, not all of whom are on Atkins.

Of course, I already know how many of you will deny this and post all
sorts of crap and excuses, and how you will continue to go deeper and
deeper into the brainwashing in a spiral that will most likely only
end at your death, unless somehow you're forced into a deprogramming
program, and are lucky enough to survive. Unfortunately the law is
not there to assist when it comes to forcing an adult into getting
mental health care and particularly into a cult deprogramming program.

A low carb diet does not equal a cult, nor are low carb dieters
cultists, and that includes Atkins low carbers. The only diet program
that even *remotely* resembles a cult is Weight Watchers, they have
organized meetings, and that's where any resemblance to culthood ends.
I don't know of any low carb support groups meeting weekly, or even
monthly, except online, and that isn't the same thing. All there are
are books, websites, and newsgroups, and that, does not a cult make.
It does make for a demographic, a demographic that has needs, and a
market willing to fill them. That is not a crime.

And stop comparing any style of dieting to a cult, it's very
insulting. Do you even know what a *real* cult looks like? I'm in
San Diego, we had the misfortune of being the home of Heaven's Gate.
They killed themselves because of a comet. We're also home to the
pretty much harmless Unarius cult out in El Cajon. I also know people
who's lives have been touched in very tragic ways because of real life
cults. It's not funny, it's not cute, it's in extremely bad taste, at
best. I strongly suggest you find another way to be obnoxious.

Yes, I'll take care of my own diet and let others take care of theirs,

But you aren't letting us take care of our diets, otherwise you
wouldn't be here. You'd be off doing something else.

but when it affects my own family, then it's my problem too.

Don't take it out on us, none of us caused your divorce.

Jackie Patti burbled across the ether:
The troll claims to loved his wife and divorced her because she
wouldn't do what he wanted - there is no way to reconcile those
statements in my mind.

You noticed that too. Glad I wasn't the only one. By the way, I agree
with the rest of your post too.

Snip made-up story about how Normie had to divorce his wife because
she went on Atkins and refused to stop when ordered by him to do so.

Damn boy. Now I actually feel sorry for you. How desperate do you
have to be to start lying on this sort of scale? At least you were
good for a laugh until now. Now you're just pathetic. Get some of
that deprogramming you talk about. Whoever or whatever you're here
crusading for (PETA, Ornish, ALF, etc.) has got their claws into you
deep.

Geez, in 90 days on Atkins my total cholesterol dropped from 232 to 188
(normal); HDL increased, LDL decreased, and triglycerides dropped
dramatically from a deadly 635 to 217! I was able to get off of one of my
blood pressure medications, and my liver and kidney functions both tested
normal. I was diagnosed T2 diabetic two days before beginning Atkins, with
a fasting blood glucose of 135 and HbA1c of 9. After 90 days on Atkins, my
fasting BG dropped to 90 (perfectly normal) and my HbA1c dropped to 6.0
(normal) witih NO medications. No sign of artheriosclerosis. Oh yeah, and
I've dropped 45 pounds.

Hmmm, I wonder which one of these health changes it is that you suppose will
do me in? Is it the reduced cholesterol? Lower triglycerices? normal blood
sugars? Normal kidney/liver functions? Diabetes controlled with no meds?
Moving from the BMI considered morbidly obese to just "overweight," and not
far now from "normal?"

Now who do you suppose I will listen to? The empirical proof that I've
personally experienced that a low-carb/moderate-protein/high-fat diet is
remarkably healty and life-extending for me -- or your completely ignorant
blabbering based on some sort of god-knows-what hate agenda? Gee, tough
choice! Troll away, follow a low-fat/high carb diet and die young, or eat
healthy low-carb and enjoy a long life. Your choice.

Healthily yours,

You know i'm actually starting to agree with you about the brainwashing
thing. I was on atkins for 3 months and yes I lost some weight, but it
wasn't with out a price. Just 2 weeks ago I was in the emergency room with a
morphine iv drip in my arm. Apparently my gallbladder had became
mysteriously enflamed. The doctor said my liver and kidney functions were
horrid. He said he's seen a couple of people come in with similar problems.
He refered me to a dietician who worked with me and helped me form a healthy
way of eatting that was loosly based on a diabetic diet that was well
rounded and limited calories to a respectable amount. I don't care how much
fat or protein keeps me from being hungry. I can deal with being hungry a
few weeks until my body gets used to the lower ammount of calories. It beats
the hell out of being in the hospital again.

snip the silly propoganda

I feel sorry for you. I truly do. How lonely it must be out there these
days for the anti-Atkins trolls! Now that Dr. Atkins' work has been
vindicated; the health benefits of controlled-carbohydrate diets proven

with
scientific studies; the fast food industry groing through a low-carb
marketing revolution; and controlled carb eating becoming more and more
accepted by even the mainstream medical communtiy.

I feel sorry for you. You are so lacking in self worth that you
allowed the Atkins cult to brainwash you so far that even these facts
which I posted in black and white, right before your very eyes mean
nothing. Oh well, it's no skin off my back. When the acids begin
coming out of your pores and you smell so bad that no one wants to be
around you, right before your kidneys fail, and you have your heart
attack, just remember what I said, and what these websites PROVED.
I suggest you read EVERY WORD of what I posted, not just the first
paragraph. Did you actually read the part about Atkins heart problems
and clogged arteries? (I doubt it). There are four extensive web
articles posted here. Of course, I know your "type". Just like those
brainwashed kids that burned to death in Waco TX, brainwashed and
controlled by David Koresh, brainwashed right into their graves, you
will follow Atkins right into your grave. It's the spineless types
like yourself that are so easily persuaded into these fraudulant scam
cults, and you will pay with your life.

I'll never change your mind, because it's too late for you. Atkins is
your cult leader, and no one else is right. But there are others who
still have their own minds, and they may still have hope, and some of
them will be saved from their own destruction.

Atkins was and his messages are quackery. The truths are becoming
more and more evident. Soon the fad will end, and only those like
yourself will continue to rot away while your arteries clog. Your
life will pass, and the rest of us will still be here trying to
comprehend how people like yourself can allow some obese dead man who
died from heart conditions, make you believe he's a diet guru.

My final note to you. There are deprogrammers out there who can
deprogram people who are consumed by a cult. I suggest you contact
one of them. You need one.

You sound almost as bad as he does. Just because it worked for you doesnt

I hope it *was* caused by lowcarbing in your case - because then it
won't come back again. If not you're going to be a hurting puppy
again. Good luck and good health.

Take care,
