Living Longer Thru Atkins
There's a fascinating article in today's New Scientist online. It's an
interview with Cynthia Kenyon, a well-known biologist who studies aging, and who's been able to double the active lifespan of C. elegans worms. In the middle of the article, she mentions she's on (basically) Atkins. She had tried caloric restriction, which is known to extend lifespan in the lower animals. But she couldn't handle being hungry all the time. So she cut out all sugars & simple carbs instead. She loves it, and says its reduction of insulin levels is similar to the kind of effects she expects the next crop of anti-aging drugs to have. Check it out! I was really interested in this but the link you listed just sent me to the New
Scientist site. I found the article you're talking about ( I think) by searching on Cynthia Kenyon but I didn't see any mention of Atkins. Was this the one you meant? http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99993303 c Jonesing for Science |

Living Longer Thru Atkins
The correct URL is:
http://www.newscientist.com/opinion/...jsp?id=ns24171 I think this is indeed very interesting. Unfortunately, with humans, longevity is very hard to study indeed (you have to wait so damned long). We can only hope that 50-75 years from now we'll start to see the first groups of long-lived low-carbers passing the century mark in great shape. I would love to see someone do a study on the effects of low carb diets in the elderly. Unfortunately with the medical establishments view of low-carb they'd probably see such a study as borderline unethical. A question for the group - is there any historical precedent for long term adherence to a low carb, high quality diet? What I mean is, are there any historical records for societies that ate a largely low carb diet due to local food availability? It would be interesting to get an idea of what their longevity was. My guess is that there aren't any such societies - as most of the truly successful civilizations where heavily agricultural (grain based) - and most of the low carber were subsistence level hunter-gatherers who probably died for reasons other than old age. -josh -josh EmmaPeel wrote in message . .. Sorry, Joshua Vanderberg got it right: http://www.newscientist.com/opinion/...jsp?id=ns24171 She mentions her low-carb diet about 3/4 the way thru the interview. ========= started 10-99: 163-146-155-139-? ========= Low Carb Savvy Shopper - losing lbs and saving $$$ http://lowcarbshopper.bestmessageboard.com |
