As I read through the post about the bother about people saying "You must
feel great!" I was agreeing with most of the posts. But, I was struck by
one thought...I wish I had had the change of heart to lose weight when I was
younger; I wish I could have rustled up the committment. Why? oh, maybe my
battered and painful knees caused by too much weight for too many years,
years of family photos without me in them because I didn't want my picture
taken - I could go on and on. But the biggest reason is probably an inane
one....now that I am in, to put it delicately for those guys on the group,
change of life, my metabolism has slowed to practically reverse and I am
having to struggle for each pound. So....those of you young women out
there...lose it while you are young, don't lose your committment and take
advantage of your faster metabolism. My mother always told me that, but who
knew she's be right about this one. Elise.

Mine was a fear of failure. I have a huge fear of failure in most things
that I attempt to do, so at times I simply don't make an attempt. Weight
loss was one that I had never attempted. I had never cut back,
moderated, counted calories, exercised or *anything*. I wasn't one of
those women who were constantly on a diet, spending money on books, gyms
or any of that. Smoking was the same - I never tried to quit smoking
because of fear of failure.
Now, I've done both
Where that courage came from to attempt with the same risks as always is
beyond me, but I am very glad it happened for me. Very glad. My friend
Diane made the comment the other day about my fear of failure. She said
"For someone who doesn't take that risk often, when you do.. it works"

That was another motivator for me, 40 is coming in a few short years and I
knew it wasn't going to get any easier. At least you finally came around
Elise!

I can certainly attest to the gaining of weight during menopause. I never
had a weight problem until that time in my life. I gained about 20 pounds
and then packed on a few more when I quit smoking. I find it much harder to
lose the weight as I get older. Exercise is the key to weight loss for me.

I know what you mean..... I spent my enitre 20's fat. I haven't been under
225 since I was 17. I don't want to spend my entire 30's this way too....

Anyway, it is better late then never. At least you are getting better,
regardless of age.

I'm post menopausal too. I don't have any evidence that I gained
weight particularly at this time, but my weight has never been the
same two months running so it's hard to say. I certainly find it
doesn't fall off as quickly as it used to though.
