Low Carb Cereal
Because I'm starting to get tired of having eggs every morning I visited my
local GNC and bought a low carb hot cereal they sold. It's marketed by "Low Carb Success" and is called Flax Meal Instant Natural Hot Cereal. To cook it you just add boiling water to a half cup of cereal. I usually end up eating close to a cup though. Per half cup it has 13 gms of carbs and 12 gms of fiber along with 130 calories. The listed ingredients are wheat bran, flax seed meal and soy protein. It's not really great tasting but not awful either. The biggest problem that I see is the typical outrageous GNC price. It seems as though it wouldn't be hard to just mix the ingredients yourself at lower cost, although I'm not sure of the proportions. Has anyone tried doing this or have alternate cereal recipes? |

Quick note: If you choose to use flaxseed, because it keeps longer unground, and it's usually cheaper, remember when you grind flaxseed (coffee grinder) it fluffs up to almost double the volume. So: 1/2 cup ground flaxseed 1 or 2 scoops bran and/or soy and/or whey protein-- adjust to taste and more importantly, texture (flaxseed/meal by itself is rather 'slimy'). You'll have to decide for yourself the best ratio. Splenda or other artificial sweetener to taste (1 or 2 tsp equivalent usually) Berries and/or nuts to taste (if you like) dash of cinammon or nutmeg, (if you like) tsp of shredded unsweetened coconut (if you like) cold or hot cream or hot water (you can use boiling water, but it destroys the delicate omega 3 oils in flaxseed). Low Carb Cereal
Atkins has 3 new flavors of cereal, and they are very good. My wife
and I have them for breakfast once or twice a week as an alternative to eggs and bacon.
