Default Seeing a Nutritionist

I am approx. 60lb overweight and have been trying to lose weight ever
since I can remeber.
My doctor agreed that I should see a nutritionist. I have no idea what
to expect, has anyone any experience with seeing a registered
nutrionist or with a referral from a doctor?

Friends of mine have worked with the nutritionist at my gym.
Basically, she develops customized eating plans for them given their
caloric needs, exercise levels, lifestyles, and food preferences, then
meets with them periodically to see how their doing, make needed
changes, and I guess provide encouragement. The diet plans are of the
general, balanced sort, with lots of fruits and veggies -- based on
numbers of servings of different types of foods, rather than on
counting calories. I don't know that she would recommend something
different such as an Atkins-like approach.

I've talked with her from time to time about specific questions -- for
example, recommendations for nutrition related to sports performance
and endurance. I've found her knowledgeable and helpful. But I'm
sure, like any profession, individuals differ.

I think what always helps is to ask yourself what you would want from a
nutritionist. I found it very helpful to realize that although my
nutritionist could give me feedback on how I was doing in terms of
healthy eating, it was still me who needed to do the work.

What works for me is counting. How much veg, fruit, water, calories etc
I eat. i tracked it using special software. A lot of people here use

I just finished a 12 week program with a registered dietician. After an
initial assessment and interview she decided on a set of food selections
with a calorie limit for daily intake. Each week I met with her and shared
my food journal with her and discussed any concerns or upcoming situations
that I might need guidance with. Every four weeks we did a reassessment with
measurements and body fat %. She is also a certified personal trainer so she
kept tabs on my fitness program and offered suggestions.

I was very pleased with my program and plan to continue to see her every
three weeks for the next few months then I"ll probably wean down to
once/month.

FWIW, I did very well with my 12 weeks. I lost 15 pounds, 4.75% of body fat
and 26.5 inches overall. 8 of those just in my hips!
