Link to WebMD Article on 'The Biggest Loser' Reality Show
http://cssvc.health.webmd.compuserve.../95/103433.htm I know it's a reality gameshow, but I am a little concerned that this will dis-illusion people into thinking that they can lose as much weight as the contestants and keep it off by adopting the same weight loss plan... Matty 481/387/250 |

Matty 481/387/250 I watched it this evening and was just horrified. People had what I felt were typical weight losses - everything from 0 to 3 pounds, maybe a few lost more. They were acting like it was the end of the world. It's just sad that their expectations are so unrealistic and that the "professionals" dealing with these folks didn't bother to emphasize beforehand how unlikely it would be that they'd see double digit losses in the second week. The absolute worst part was the guy that gained 3 pounds and started crying. He reminds me of a former student (looks and personality) and I just couldn't stand to watch him be exploited like that. I'm so done watching that show. Jenn |

I was actually happy to see that no one had lost more than 3 lbs this week and that the guy who lost 22 lbs last week (ridiculous!) gained 3 back. I was wondering what the hell they were doing that first week -- i.e. water pills, purging -- because I can't imagine anyone under 300 lbs. having 22 lbs. of water weight, but perhaps I'm misinformed about that. I honestly can't stand the show and all its stupid drama, but feel compelled to watch it. I must enjoy shouting at the screen. (Does that count in the President's Challenge as exercise?) Mary Whoops, correcting the top-posting and just wanted to add that I didn't see your comments, Jenn -- I agree with them (but know that I will be tuning in next Tuesday) -- wait, that's the election night -- no way will I be watching the Biggest Loser. (I am hoping to see my own idea of the Biggest Loser getting voted out of office.) I completely agree with your comment that why in the world didn't their trainers tell them not to expect a loss this week and that it was unreasonable to expect to ever lose that much again in one week? Perhaps they did tell them and it was edited out -- people don't like to hear stuff like that anyway (the contestants, I mean). I felt really bad too when the guy was crying and was disgusted with that Ryan guy pulling that cruel stunt when he voted the "skinny" girl off. Well I guess they have to have some conflict or no one would watch. Ditto with the broad with the exercise pants coming within 1/8" of her crotch. My friend asked, "why is she dressing like that?" and I said, "to get the male audience, who would never tune in if he knew he'd only have a bunch of fat women to look at." Mary |

Mary It's not going to be on next week because of the election. I also agree with you about that Ryan guy, what an a-hole. You know the women will be gone first, then the older guys and the last one left will be one of the younger guys - since they're mostly basing their decisions on who to vote off based on potential for biggest/fastest weight loss. Jenn I saw part of the show last night and I whole heartedly agree about Ryan. I'm afraid I would have been tempted to rip his face off if I had been presentg Hopefully the small weight losses on this show have shown many people they can't expect to have large losses each week. Let's hope they continue to have reasonable losses each week. Beverly |
