Counting carbs and calories question
I know that technically this is not a 'stall' since it's only been a couple
of weeks without seeing the scale move anywhere and I know that there are some who don't put much stock in Ketostix or the like, but I have a question. If said Ketostix turn purple and, yet, the scale doesn't go down, am I still in ketosis? This is probably a stupid question and I'll most likely get some smart-aleck answer, but I'm really curious. I emailed the people at the Atkins website, and all they did was send me their chapter on plateaus. I trust you people here more. Another question: I've been following the formula for counting calories in the ANDR (multiply weight by 10 or 12) and does this work for any of you? Do I use the weight I want to be, or my weight now for calculating my caloric needs for weight loss? Or is this formula just a load of bunk? Yes, I have been eating much fewer calories and carbs, and I have been exercising almost everyday. -- Linda 296/244/160 LC since Oct. 13, 2003 |

If said Ketostix turn purple and, yet, the scale doesn't go down, am I still in ketosis? Yes. Ketones are the by-product of fat breakdown for fuel. If you have ketones, you are in ketosis, whether you're losing or not. Some have to go as low as 7 or 8 instead for weight loss. Do I use the weight I want to be, or my weight now for calculating my caloric needs for weight loss? They usually work out to be pretty close to the same thing. Or is this formula just a load of bunk? It's a rough rule of thumb. You should tweak it for your own needs if it doesn't work 'out of the box'. Yes, I have been eating much fewer calories and carbs, and I have been exercising almost everyday. I do six measures (male) neck, chest, waist, hip, thigh, and arm(bicep). People see inches decrease even when the scale isn't moving. and I know that there are some who don't put much stock in Ketostix or the like, but I have a question. Yes, if they show purple you are in ketosis but you may not be burning body fat if you're eating too many calories (too much dietary fat). |

Counting carbs and calories question
I have been on Atkins since 1/1/04 and have lost 35 pounds. My
experience with slow downs drove me crazy.... My suggestion... You are not eating enough! We get into a frame of mind that we are dieting, there for not eating enough. You need to remember that this is not a diet but away of life. Eat! Eat good low carb foods. I use macadamia nuts in the morning to kick me into burning fat. It is in the book (under the fat fast). I still use the strips some times just to check to see if i am on track. And I usually am. Also water is good. I do not drink it like I should, But I do start the day with a bottle and go to bed after one. Before you get discouraged, take your measurements. Not sure why my measurements go down with out weight, but it does. Try the nuts in the morning, and take your measurements! Hang in there! Lori Lena |
