Bought a 4-pack of the Slim Fast new low carb shakes. Nutritional info
looks good, regarding carbs, calcium, fiber, protein, etc. I was
drinking one today and glanced at the ingredients. After water and
milk solids, the 3rd ingredient is canola oil!!! I really think that's
nasty. After I read that, all I could think of with each swallow was
that I was drinking chocolate flavored vegetable oil. I'll try to
drink the last two, but I don't think I'll be buying them again. Too
much fat....and oil. Yuck.

Good move. I couldn't see very many ingredients in that product
which resembled food in the least.

I think the drink your meal diets are insane. It just violates common
sense for me. When my father was dying of throat cancer he stopped
being able to swallow solids. He had to drink Ensure because he simply
couldn't eat nutritiously. I can't look at the meal-drinks without
thinking that that is the same idea as for people who are so sick that
they drink or I.V. their meals. It isn't natural and teaching yourself
to simply not eat solid food is wrong. Regardless of what they put in
the stuff.

The 3rd ingredient in the Atkins shakes is soybean oil, if I'm not mistaken.
How else can they get 9 grams of fat into those shakes? LOL!

I make my own shake using 1/3 cup cottage cheese, cold hazelnut coffee,
ground flax seed and splenda or sweet & low to taste, plenty of ice. It's
not that bad. If you can afford the carbs you could use frozen strawberries
& coconut flavoring.

I guess I'm in the minority here because I really like them! BUT I don't
drink them I freeze the cans & eat it like ice cream. Two carbs for 11.5 oz.
of "ice cream" is a nice nightly treat. I couldn't drink them as 2 meal
replacements like they suggest. I love my meat too much!

Lee,

Just curious ... did you taste it before you read the ingredients? Or was
it only because you read the ingredients that your were grossed out? How do
they taste?

Canola is a "healthy" oil, high in monounsaturated fats; helps lower HDL
cholesterol. Why is this gross? (I'm not being facetious, I'm serious.).
Is it just the thought that you are drinking something with an oil in it
that bothers you? We eat oils all the time in various foos.

I had one of the shakes a few weeks ago, and didn't glance at the
ingredients. It tasted okay - nothing great. Then, I had my second one
yesterday, which is when I looked at the ingredients. After reading
that oil was ingredient #3, all I could taste (and feel in my mouth)
was oil.

I know canola oil isn't a "bad" oil. But, that doesn't mean I want to
drink it. Fat is fat. As ingredients are listed in order of weight,
seems to me that there's too much oil in this "beverage", pushing it
over the "healthy" limit.

Let's see. I bought this 4-pack about two weeks ago, and just had my
second one yesterday. I'm not sure this discussion was about
"drinking" vs. "chewing" your meals, but, at least for me, these
shakes were purchased and cosnumed as a convenience "food" when I
didn't have time or ingredients to make a meal of solid food. I hardly
think that two meal replacement shakes in a two-week span of time is
"insane".

When my father was dying of throat cancer he stopped
being able to swallow solids. He had to drink Ensure because he simply
couldn't eat nutritiously. I can't look at the meal-drinks without

So, you personally, have problems with meal replacement shakes becuase
of past trauma. Sorry about the loss of your dad. But, keep in mind
that our experiences are different - what works for some may not work
for others. That's no reason to call someone else's way "insane".
