LA JOYA, Texas - A 2-year-old boy who died with a fractured skull may
have been accidentally crushed by a morbidly obese relative,
authorities say.

Investigators believe the woman fell on the child, who was pronounced
dead Tuesday, said Bobby Contreras, Hidalgo County justice of the
peace.

"It didn't look like there was any foul play from what I saw," he
said.

An autopsy was scheduled, with the cause of death to be released
Monday.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino, who called the death
"suspicious," said he would wait for an announcement on the cause
before deciding whether to file charges.

The child was believed to have been dropped off by his mother to spend
the day with the bedridden relative, The McAllen Monitor reported Friday.

It does seem suspicious to me too. Seems like an obese person would be
cushion a toddler rather than breaking his skull. Of course, they
could bounce off the adult like a ball bearing hitting a cushion in a
pin ball game and do the damage against some hard object, but fat is
kind of soft and kids are tough. Of course if a flying stingray can
kill you while riding in a boat, I wouldn't rule out accidental. dkw

Why would you leave a 2 y/o with a "bed ridden" person? Obese or
otherwise?

Mary G. replies:
That was my first thought as well. Holy cow, you need mobility to look
after an active toddler - how could you leave a little one in the care
of someone who can't get up. The parents share part of the blame for
this one. Beyond poor judgement.
