does it really work?
I tried the Atkins diet, and yes I lost the obligatory one and a half stone.
Unfortunately being English I have been brought up on a diet of chips, potatoes and sandwiches, all of which are a no, no. I soon slipped into my old ways of "if it's going to waste, I'd better eat it". I now weigh more than when I first went on the diet. My question is, "has anyone from England actually managed this diet"? |

My suggestion for dieters is "all you can eat of British food"! doug |

Americans are similar. The american staples are burgers & fries,
heroes(big long sandwiches), white bread, pizza and snacks & desserts. Even pasta has become such an American staple that I don't consider it an Italian food at all. And really, what country worships junk food more than us?? Hell what country has invented as much junk food as us? "Geoff" wrote: I tried the Atkins diet, and yes I lost the obligatory one and a half stone. Unfortunately being English I have been brought up on a diet of chips, potatoes and sandwiches, all of which are a no, no. I soon slipped into my old ways of "if it's going to waste, I'd better eat it". Atkins speaks of foods as addictions and eliminating carbs goes a long way to dealing with a major craving generator. THat's why a slip up can bring you crashing out of the diet. You've triggered what fundamentally works like an addiction. Atkins suggests immediately returning to strict induction to bring cravings back under control. I now weigh more than when I first went on the diet. Sounds like the typical experience of dieting for a limited time. Atkins is for life. I think it is well suited to those suffering from long term obesity. If carbs are what is causing you to lose control of your eating, you can't go back. It is extremely similar to a diabetic's condition (shares much with them). Indulging regularly and in large quantities of carbs can lead to drastic consequences. My question is, "has anyone from England actually managed this diet"? Not from that side of the pond, but... Here in the U.S. I do find eating out to be *THE* hassle. Much easier to cook my own meals at home. Sure at a nicer($$$) or a small friendly restaurant they are more willing to sub another vegetable serving in place of the rice/potato/fries staple. But a lot of chains won't. Even ones that offer low-carb meals don't substitute on their non-LC meals. WHen I eat out I also see a lot of interesting choices that I can't eat regularly, so eating out more than eating in can be challenging to staying the course. You probably don't have access to the many LC products coming out here--both good and bad. Many are not good-tasting or for your diet. But I consider some worthwhile substitutes for higher carbs regulars. DiGiTAL_ViNYL (no email) 350/302/Apr-299/200 Atkins since Jan 12, 2004 OWL-50 carbs/day (CCLL=?) |

That was a good first effort.

Well I'm from England and I'm managing OK, been sticking to Atkins since 22nd November last year and lost 42 pounds so far. It does sometimes feel when you're out and about that you are surrounded by high carb food, the staff restaurant where I work is a low carbers no go area. We also have very little in the way of franken food low carb products over here (this is possibly a good thing) and it's seemingly impossible to find a sugar free product that isn't sweetened with Asparteme (which stalls me). But low carb can be can be done in the UK. I think it's as much a behavioural change as a diet change. -- Junk Food Monkey ~~~~~~ Use the Reply To address only to email me. http://www.junkfoodmonkey.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk |
