Unpopped vs. Popped Popcorn
Hey all -
I was in the grocery store looking at popcorn today. I noticed two nutritional value columns on every box I looked at: One for unpopped popcorn (higher numbers in calories and everything else), one for popped popcorn (lower). Why would you eat unpopped popcorn? Wouldn't that be the brown kernels? Why would the nutritional value change once you pop the kernels in the microwave? Thanks! Jen 228/188/153 |

Jen 228/188/153 They don't mean for you to eat it unpopped. They're just talking about how you measure it. If you want to eat a certain size of serving it might be easier to measure it before you pop it (that's what I do). Then once you've popped it, it has the number of calories of that measured portion. If you measure the popped corn it has expanded a bunch in volume so the same measure -- say one cup -- would be far less popcorn. I think 1/4 cup of unpopped corn is around 120 calories, and that will turn into about 4 cups of popped corn -- still 120 calories. Chris 262/140/ (145-150) Yes, surely this is what those of us who count calories do with things like rice or pasta - you need to be able to weigh or measure it raw in order to know how much to prepare in the first place. janice |

I can't imagine eating unpopped popcorn -- too hard on the teeth! |
