The rest of the world wasn't brought up. So while it *might* be presumptuous of me to say the rest of the world need not be concerned about our Presidential elections it's a red herring - I said no such thing Carmen, you said: "It's presumptuous to advocate for a particular candidate when you live in Norway and have for at least the last 8 years. You won't be obliged to live in the society that person and his/her party help mold." What did you mean if not that people who don't live in the US don't have to live in a society molded by the US? In fact, the US is the only world power now. Whatever the US does affects everybody, so everybody is interested in who gets elected as President of the US. Beyond that, I am a citizen of the US, and as a citizen of the US, I have the right to vote in US elections and campaign for the candidates of my choice. This applies to US citizens wherever they live. There is nothing presumptuous about it. You don't know what the *present* society is. You haven't lived here. How can you mold the American society of the future while being ignorant of the present society? By voting for the candidate I want to lead the country and, hopefully, begin to lead the world. I know what the present society is in the US, and I know what the present society is in Norway and in Australia. I also know a lot about the rest of the world. Our current President, who is charged with forming foreign policy, appears not to know much about the *present* society in the rest of the world. Whether he understand the present society in America is suspect. Besides that, I am a citizen of the United States, so I get to participate in its political process wherever I am in the world. I encourage you to do the same. I always have since I was of age to do so. It's unfortunate that you're allowed the same privilege sans any of the responsibility. You are mistaken. What responsibilities are you saying I don't share? I served in the US military. Did you? I file my income tax form and pay my share of taxes every year. I have to pay in two countries. Hi Martin,
It doesn't look as if you and I are going to get anywhere with this issue. We're both interpreting even the basic premises so differently that we may as well be speaking different languages. Could be for any number of reasons - age difference, upbringing, gender even - but there's no sense to beating our heads against a wall while we talk past each other. I hope your husband makes it home soon. Thank you. He's been gone since February, and we've been told he might come back as early as next February. Take care, Carmen |

The responsibilities you do not share, Martin, are the ones that will come from the choice of President. If the next one decides that we all have to submit DNA samples and retinal scans you won't have to do it sitting over in Norway. The present one has that already set in motion. |
