Atkins' critics surprised by recent study

During the one-year pilot study, bad cholesterol levels in a group of
Atkins dieters remained unchanged, good cholesterol went up and
dangerous triglyceride levels dropped.

I wish they would do before and after CRP, homeocysteine, and blood
pressure readings. Why only cholesterol?

Don donwiss at panix.com.

I went on Atkins for a few months and my cholesterol shot up. My LDL
doubled. The studies report that this happens in some cases (%5). Of
course, I might be doing something wrong - there are lots of details
in Atkin's book.

Anyway, I don't really need it. My weight is in the normal range. I
was just doing it because my wife started doing it.

I've tried ketogenic diet a few times over the past few years. The
diet never altered my lipid profile, with the exception of a slight
increase in HDL. When I do no carb, I eat very little saturated fat
and cholesterol, only mono- and poly-unsaturated fats. Just because
one avoids carbs does not mean a saturated fat and cholesterol
free-for-all.

This past spring I did a low carb diet. I should add that I've NEVER
had a weight problem. I do these diets to get lean for beach season
and to improve atheltic performace; drop 10-15 lbs. The low carb diet
(ie., no ketosis) resulted in a significant drop in my borderline high
blood pressure.

This country is full of a bunch of clueless sugar eaters that toss in
an ocassion refined processed carb (pasta, white bread and rice,
soda...). Sad.
