Physical Activity for Families
Family time is really important, and one of the ways to spend time
with children and grandchildren is to get involved in an activity with them. Parents and grandparents have an important role to play in encouraging children to be more physically active. The best way to do this is to lead by example. By playing games with your children you can promote an active lifestyle. If children grow up in an environment where activity is seen as fun, they are more likely to stay active as they grow older which in turn keeps them fitter and healthier. There are many ways for you and your children to be physically active. Set active challenges for your children. Many children will run backwards and forwards for hours if encouraged to beat the clock or their own record. Help older children to find an activity that they enjoy and give them the encouragement they need to gain confidence in that activity. Base family activities and outings around activity and physical games. These could include family cycle runs or walks, throwing a ball or Frisbee TM around the garden, the park, or the beach, if you have one near you. Trips out can be expensive, but if you are thinking about a cinema outing, then you might want to look at alternatives like a trip to a bowling alley or skating rink instead. Make Sunday 'Walking Day' for the whole family. If you're taking to the hills, choose a route that is within the capability of the youngest or least fit members of your family, that you are all wearing sensible walking shoes and clothes and that you leave enough time to complete the walk in daylight. Or you can find out what's available locally by clicking on the what's going on in your area.
