Well, Here We Go!
I saw my doctor today. Gave her a chart of my BGs while I was doing
Bernstein (to demonstrate to her that even with ultra-low-carbing, my numbers sucked). She was delighted with my numbers! They ranged from 111 to 196, and the daily averages were all in the 130s. For someone whose goal is to have all numbers between 80 and 120, her delight was quite a blow to me. No additional Metformin for da Damsel. I'm to take 50 mg of Precose before breakfast to try to control dawn phenomenon. She says my numbers may be elevated due to stress. Me? Stress? LOL! She also says I can have small amounts of fruit for lunch or dinner, as long as I eat the fruit instead of another carb, rather than in addition to it. I see a lot of broccoli-cheese omelets in my future. Lots of chef's salads (or tuna on lettuce). Lots of cole slaw. What I mean by lots is frequent, not large quantities. Rosie posted earlier (and I deleted all her posts, because I had just awakened, and was running on auto-pilot) that Bernstein recommends ten times your *goal* weight as a target for calorie consumption. That takes a lot of pressure off of me to try to avoid starvation levels of calories. There were times when I was doing Bernstein that I had under 900 calories logged to FitDay. Gotta read Bernstein again to pick up some of the stuff I missed the first time around. I'm frustrated, but mostly just feel sad. I want to reach my BG goals, but can only do that by losing weight, and I don't seem able to lose weight. I'll keep plugging away at it, though. My back is feeling better enough now that I'm thinking we could be going to the gym within 2-3 days. I'll love that! That's my report. Basically, she said, "Eat less. Exercise more." G Carol -- "Years ago my mother used to say to me... She'd say 'In this world Elwood, you must be oh-so smart or oh-so pleasant.' Well, for years I was smart.... I recommend pleasant. You may quote me." *James Stewart* in the 1950 movie, _Harvey_ |

It sounds like she is a good listener to what you are saying, by prescribing something for the dawn effect. You are on the road! PoohBear |

I'm sorry you were disappointed in what the doctor said. But, it's
great that she was delighted with your progress - it must mean you are doing well. And to just keep on with it. It's nice to have hope that something will make our weight-losing easier (like me and my gum surgery!) - but I think in the end, it takes consistent will power and wanting to be healthy. These stalls are tough, though! I can understand your disappointment. Since your back is feeling better, hopefully some exercise will help. I am amazed how my walking 1.5 hours a day has become an enjoyable habit. Even though I haven't lost weight in a while, I've kept up with it - just because I enjoy it and it helps my attitude! Weird.... That's my report. Basically, she said, "Eat less. Exercise more." G Your doctor wasn't named Dr. Der Koenig, was she?!! Michelle |

Now I just have to figure out how the hell to start losing weight without rebounding all the time. I'll get back to being religious about using FitDay, do more reading, and see what happens. I'm more comfortable with Atkins, but it seems that Bernstein works better for my BG control. I've just gotta figure out how do it so I don't feel like a prisoner of the diet, but like a practitioner of the diet. Any experienced Bernsteiners out there who can make some food suggestions? Sounds like you are moving in the right direction. I hope so. At the very least, I know that I have to do some serious focusing on what I eat, because I won't be getting additional help from medication. It's all on me. I own it now. Better take care of it, huh? I was very disappointed when I left my appointment, but now I'm feeling more empowered, instead of just going along for the ride. My whole attitude has changed in a few short hours.
