All of this is WILD!
I appreciate that someone noticed that fat content of foods DOES matter a great deal for satiety. People are programmed to want fat as a matter of survival, just like they want and need salt. (Excess salt is excreted in the urine unless you are one of the tiny minority who are broken.) I also agree with the assessment of fervor present in the crazy man. It has been noticed before that some people who seem to crave attention to an inordinate extent pick up on religious type issues to throw in front of the rest of humanity, claiming the higher moral ground, and insiting that people listen and pay attention. This includes a whole lot of bible thumpers, fire and brimstone preachers, medicine men, snake oil salemen, environmentalists and, alas, it seems the diet police! The FED told people that salt was bad for them based on statistical studies that found athat very tiny subset of humanity was being given high blood pressure from consuming salt. They took that probability and whipped into a "risk" to the general population. On this basis they said that everyone should cut out salt. It was a stupid misapplication of actuarial data to science. They neglected to notice that if you removed those with kidney problems from consideration that there were NO bad effects from consuming salt. About 1998 or so they, rather quietly, put out retractions to their years earlier advice to eschew salt. It seems that people were ending up in emergency rooms in increasing numbers with fairly serious medical problems from too little sodium. So without even passing laws, the crazies have had a bad effect. And now the PETAs and the other do-gooders have goose poop everywhere, deer eating the azaleas in the front yard, and cougars stalking people in town. One local gradeschool has been keeping kids in from recess because of cougar sightings in town near the school. We are increasingly finding that these attention seekers are just that. The supposed facts they tout are just so much pap, tripe, words crafted to command attention without any real basis in fact. Laurence |

Did you not bother to read the article and see that it supports Atkins and a low-carb way of eating? Priscilla Yeah right.... Especially the part about his clogged arteries and heart problems. That definately supports his diet (if you're suicidal). Atkins had cardiomyopathy caused by a virus. His ARTERIES, OTOH were relatively clear. In any case, it had NOTHING to do with his death. He was 195 lbs when he was admitted to the hospital after sustaining a massive HEAD WOUND after slipping on the ice. He bloated up to 258 lbs DURING his stay in the hospital as his major organs started to shut down. Let's try an experiment: you have someone shove you REALLY hard (that should be EASY to persuade someone to do) so that you fall and hit YOUR head on the sidewalk and sustain a MASSIVE head wound. If, while in a coma, your body freakishly swells up with excess fluid before you die a week or so later due to massive organ failure, we were right; if not, we'll all agree that YOU were right. It's a win-win situation. So, go ahead and put your money where your mouth is -- PROVE us wrong by EXAMPLE. -- Saffire 205/162/125 - 5'2.5" Atkins since 6/14/03 Progress photo: http://photos.yahoo.com/saffire333 |

I am afraid you probably will not convince most of people (including me) to quit, but I think you would be welcomed and your story discussed - if that is what you want. Mirek What? His former wife went on Atkins, lost weight, and improved her life, and he wants what? What kind of "compulsion" did she have? To eat meat? -- Bob in CT Remove ".x" to reply |

To eat meat? Be fair. There is a difference between 17 year PETA troll and desperate divorced man. And, in fact, I would like to know details - to learn from them. Like what garbage food his wife cooked, what medical problems she had etc. It is also worth examining whether there is not something like "LC anorexy". I would also like to know what happened to her next (whether she really improved her life) and perhaps what is weight of OP. Let him speak (if he wants), this might be interesting. Mirek |

Well it sounds like you or your ex-wife was mentally ill(according to
your opinion alone). It had nothing to do with the diet. You couldn't stand to kiss her because she smelled so bad... way to support your wife while she fights obesity. Many of us know to look at both sides. Maybe you liked a fat wife who was probably miserable inside. SHe didn't want to be with you and go out with you--maybe her eyes were opening. Her dropping weight may have caused you to obsess about Atkins since it cost you a dependent woman. We come across all types on the internet. I know well about mental illness. I have four life-long mentally ill siblings who are still alive. Another dead, and a mother who is psychologically very frail and losing memory. They obsess about a variety of things as if they are the only important things in the world. Angels (not god, Angels), exercise, a multitude of diets, hair loss, making lists, keeping things clean, buy things to sell them then buy them again, feeding people, writing the same things over and over. It is not these tasks that are "evil". It is mental illness. The fact that you blame everything in your wife's life and apparently yours on Atkins, means you probably need to check yourself into a therapist's office. You will attach yourself to any one or any article that agrees with you. You failed to locate the multitude of webpages that discuss the clinical studies that show atkins was correct. And none of them show that Atkins causes mental illness or cults--as you continue to twaddle about. You have formed your own cult--the Atkins Haters Club and no amount of words could dissuade you from your self-imposed delusion. Her dropping weight may have caused you to obsess about Atkins since it cost you a dependent woman. We come across all types on the internet. *Some* people on low-carb sound cultish. The whole deal with quoting chapter and verse from low-carb books is a bit weird, rather like people quoting scripture. Sometimes people "argue" by quoting Atkins rather than research cites or even plain old common sense. I can see where it could sound that way to an outsider, heck it sounds sorta cultish to me sometimes. On the other hand, I'm diabetic so my choice is between low-carbing for life or continual deterioration of my health and an early death. It doesn't matter if low-carb is popular in a faddish sense, if some low-carbers are silly or cultish. This is my life at stake... and I'd rather risk being "lumped in" with the fads, silliness and cults than risk blindness, amputation, heart disease, kidney disease and premature death. That the troll's ex-wife chose her health and fitness over drinking in bars every weekend and being kiss-able strikes me as a quite sane choice on her part; that she continued to make that choice in the face of an ultimatum seems the only reasonable course of action. I can't imagine choosing to ruin my health for the sake of someone who claimed to love me if their "love" required me to risk my health and life. That's just an insane request to make of anyone and a ridiculous degree of hubris is required to think your pleasure should be valued more to someone than their own life. I'd not hesitate to stand between a bullet and either my husband or daughter to protect them, because I love them. But if they asked me to get shot just as a precondition of the relationship cause they liked me better that way, they'd have to be told to **** off. Not that they'd ever ask something so stupid in the first place since they both genuinely love me. The troll claims to loved his wife and divorced her because she wouldn't do what he wanted - there is no way to reconcile those statements in my mind. |
