Don't mean to be impolite, but first of all, what business is it of yours

I have to agree with Bryan here. The starting premise of this
thread is rich with the whole "holier than thou" attitude that
dieters/health nuts sometimes take. It really is no business of yours
what anyone else decides to put into their body. You are not a better
person than they are because you have given up a particular "bad food".
We all have choices to make about the foods we choose to eat, and we all
have to live with the ramifications of those choices.

For what it's worth, I've pretty much given up soda also. I used to
drink one or two a day; now I'll have one or two a month. I don't think
they are evil; I would just rather use my calorie budget in a different
way. And ya, I drink the sugared stuff. Not because I think that
artificial sweeteners are bad, I just don't like the taste. Am I bad
person for having the occasional soda? You might think so, but I'm also
free the think that you're being pretty damned narrow minded and
judgmental.

Oh, in answer to this thread's title. People drink soda because they
taste good, and often because they deliver a wanted caffeine fix. And
I'm pretty sure that not just American's drink them.

That has nothing to do with if somone can comment on what they are
doing. We are all free to give our opinion on what anyone else is doing.

A bit touchy.

We all have choices to make about the foods we choose to eat, and we all
have to live with the ramifications of those choices.

Obesity is going to increase health care costs immensely. We all are
going to live with the ramifications.

For what it's worth, I've pretty much given up soda also.

Do you feel like a better person now?

I don't think they are evil;

Not like the devil evil, but one notch below. 7% of calories ingested
every day are for completely useless sodas.

I would just rather use my calorie budget in a different
way.

Look around. There's not much budgeting going on. An when you spend 500
calories a day on soda there's not much left to spend anywhere else.

Am I bad person for having the occasional soda?

Pot is evil. By the same stunningly narrow logic we can say soda is evil
as well. And if soda drinking was just occasional there would be no need
for this conversation, you must realize that.

You might think so, but I'm also
free the think that you're being pretty damned narrow minded and
judgmental.

Now do you feel like a better person?

I could **** on my back in russia. Would that make you happy?

Or perhaps you might want to deal with the harsh reality of what an
unchanged future holds?

If you want to lose weight, stop drinking soda, even diet soda ... a
friend of mine lost 5 pounds just stopping diet soda.

Why do Americans drink so many sodas and then obsess about their
weight? I see people drinking soda all the time. About 17 months ago I
was diagnosed as pre-diabetic and I quit soda alltogether as a result.
Today, knowing what soda can do to your body, it's very sickening for
me to see anybody drink soda. And I mean for real ... when I see
someone drink soda my skin just feels weird from the disgust. This is a
national tragedy. We need to educate people that sodas are bad when
they are young and not hooked onto it yet. Better yet, I hope soda gets
banned one day.

something goofy that I'm sure has nothing to do with any actual

Ahhh...that explains the "all over the place" opinions. Thanks.

Billions of dollars are spend on advertising sodas. Soda is

marketed
as
an essential part of life. Plus you can't walk 5 feet without a
supersized soda being available for next to nothing.

I don't want to see sodas banned, but i don't see a reason they

should
be made with sugar either.

The diet sodas are made with even worse ingredients than sugar.
You guys (who do) really shouldn't drink that stuff. Do you

actually
think a bunch of chemicals are better for you than some sugarcane?

And sugarcane is chemical free? (think vacuum).
Actually I think the natural source is better when getting all

nutrients;
however, to compare sugar cola to diet and say one is better because

it has
sugar compared to aspartame is a pretty lame.

I didn't say sugar was better, I said aspartame was NOT better. They
are pretty much equal in my book-- I would greatly limit my intake of
both natural and artificial sweeteners, and I do. Soft drinks are
something to avoid, period. Just because one has calories shouldn't
make a difference. Health is more than calories and weight gain.
