Intermittant nausea and vomiting
| My husband and I began Atkins on September 15 (so we're still in
induction). | We've both lost weight already, but I've been experiencing something my | husband has not - nausea and, twice now including this morning, vomiting. | are you sure you are eating enough? it could be due to low blood sugar, it's exactly what happens to me if i don't eat frequently enough. charl lc since 09/02 |

Intermittant nausea and vomiting

We've both lost weight already, but I've been experiencing something my husband has not - nausea and, twice now including this morning, vomiting. I HATE feeling so lousy...what on earth could be causing it? The first time the vomiting occurred was on Monday, and I dismissed it, thinking I worked out too soon after breakfast. Tuesday I felt fine. On Wednesday I experienced nausea again, but no vomiting, and felt better later in the day. This morning I again experienced vomiting, and this time I hadn't even had breakfast yet, only water. I'm also experiencing hiccups quite a lot. I know for a fact I'm not pregnant (don't ask me how I can be so sure unless you want some squicky details), so it's not morning sickness. I don't seem to be experiencing any other symptoms of a bug. On Monday I wondered if perhaps it was the ham I had with my egg for breakfast, but that doesn't account for this morning. I have a lot more weight to lose than my husband does, and I'm the food/sugar addict, not him, so could this be some sort of withdrawal? Any insights would be welcome; I'm getting awfully discouraged and ready to give up. The problem is that there are a number of things that can cause this. If you're eating more fat than usual, it might be that your body hasn't yet adjusted to that (a specific to consider is gallbladder problems). If you're eating foods that you didn't eat before or in larger quantities, you could have an allergy or intolerence to the food. I'm not allergic to eggs, but I frequently find that when I eat eggs cooked with cheese and a lot of fat, that I feel queasy. Finally, it could just be induction sickness, which is quite common. Many people report various degrees of not feeling well in the early days. Also, if you're not eating as much fiber as you're used to, you could be constipated, and that can cause nausea. It may take some experimentation and journaling to figure out what is causing your specific problems. Like most other things, a one size, off the rack eating plan, doesn't fit everyone without some tailoring. Good luck, Martha -- Begin where you are - but don't end there. |

I know for a fact I'm not pregnant (don't ask me how I can be so sure unless I get that from time to time too - I have a decaf with cream & splenda and a protein shake for breakfast on weekday mornings, and for about half an hour afterwards often feel decidedly squiffy. Fortunately I haven't vomited (though I do have to brush my teeth with caution some days!) and am definitely no pregnant either! I wondered if the shake & coffee combo curdled, or I drank them too quickly, but it doesn't happen every morning. I can't for the life of me figure it out, but I'm thinking of skipping the shake and just having the coffee for a couple of weeks to see if it helps. Perhaps your body doesn't deal well with a big breakfast - did you have a heavy breakfast pre-LC? Could you try something lighter perhaps? A small omelette, or try skipping breakfast for a few days and see if it goes away. Hope you're feeling better soon. Rachel (New Zealand) |

Ketosis can cause nausea in some people. It is a little bit unusual to experience it this far into induction, but it is not unheard of. Try upping your carb limit by 5-15g, drink more water, and don't let yourself get hungry. As counterintuitive as it may feel, when you are experiencing nausea you will probably feel better if you eat something. I always thought that was a sign of low blood sugar. If I'm really hungry and delay eating for too long I start to feel sick and pre-LC used to often get a headache and the shakes with it as well. Now I just feel a bit icky if I leave it too long. I have kept a little sour stomach feeling since then. I get a bit of heartburn when I eat lamb. I'm not sure if it's the fat in the lamb or if it's the home-made mint sauce, which is quite vinegary, but it's a bummer because I really love a nice lamb roast. Still, it's not the constant heartburn and reflux I had pre-LC so I'm still better off in the long run (except when my stoopid back plays up and I have to scoff anti-inflammatories like there's no tomorrow ... ) Rachel (New Zealand) |

I get that from time to time too - I have a decaf with cream & splenda and
a protein shake for breakfast on weekday mornings, and for about half an hour afterwards often feel decidedly squiffy. I find that if I have a protein shake or Atkins type shake on an empty stomach I get morning sickness! It's a great incentive to remember why I don't ever want to be pregnant again. -Sharon |

Interesting ... yes, it's a whey protein shake I have. Might just have coffee next week and see if it's better. cheers Rachel (New Zealand) |
