Default Safeway no sugar added ice cream makes my tummy EXPLODE!

Heh. Can anyone shed some light on this? Please?
Before I even started to do Atkins, I tried a small container of Safeway
sugar free ice cream.
I am afraid I do not recall the ingredients, and cannot hit up the internet
from where I am (just Usenet) to see what they are.

This ice cream tasted great, and since there was NO SUGAR at all, I assume
it is also low carb (I did not consider carbs at the time), but it had a
very bad effect on me, causing me to have GI problems for the better part of
the 24 hours after eating it.

And I mean PAIN in my stomach, pain like you don't get unless you have a
severe flu, or have had some sort of reaction to a food additive.
I assumed at first that this was just something else I ate, and I had a
conflicting reaction between food items, so a few weeks later I got another
container (it was Neapolitan btw, one of my favs).

Much to my disappointment, I had the EXACT SAME reaction. terrible terrible
gas, the runs, and sharp pains.
Anyone have any idea? anyone know of this ice cream?
It is Safeway select brand, and available at Safeway, or their sister stores
in California and the western usa.

"No sugar added" does not equal no sugar. Milk has sugar in it, for
instance (lactose).

Sugar alcohol (there are several kinds, and you may not have the same
reaction to all of them). Many people have that reaction, because some
(if not most) of the artificial sweetener is not digested it reaches the
lower intestine where the bacteria break it down and one of the
byproducts is gas. It can also cause loose stools.

Sugar alcohols are used where the texture of real sugar is important to
the finshed product-- like thick syrup, for instance, or the ability to
not freeze completely hard (as ice cream will do without sugar).

You can avoid the tummy troubles by 1) making sure you only eat one
serving of the product 2) making sure you eat only the kinds of sugar
alcohols that don't bother you so much or 3)don't eat them at all-- make
your own homemade lowcarb icecream-- it's easy and tastes better than
anything you'll find in a store.

Check the faq for all the recipe sites, and google the group for posted
recipes.

No, it was NO SUGAR PERIOD ice cream. It said that there was no sugar
content, 0g of sugar.
That is why i thought "cool, i will give it a try".

Wow, you know a ton about this.
Are you "home schooled", or are you a nutritionalist or something to that
effect?

That's not possible, if it's actually ice cream. Like Revek said, milk
has carbs from the lactose.

A friend of mine had a similar experience....did you also have the "nonfat
no sugar added"? She felt that it was the stuff they used as a fat
substitute that made her sick.

"Home schooled". I spent a solid year reading this group for 6-8 hours
every day plus many of the associated links (housewife with teens who
had drivers liscences --taxi service at my house ended the day they
passed the test). I didn't read everything available, because there are
some things I'm not interested in or don't pertain to me. My memory is
not as good as it was when I was in high school (I could read a textbook
and remember the page the answer was on during tests many weeks
later) -- it deteriorated somewhat over the years for various reasons,
but I can still remember quite a bit. Plus you can find an answer to
just about everything you can think of if you google the archives (not
necessarily a correct answer mind you... LOL).

Hi there,

It sounds as though it is the sugar alcohols contained in the ice cream that
are causing the problem. I had the same problem with diabetic sweets the
first time I ate them. Try not to eat too much of the stuff at once...
after a while your body will get used to them. I can eat diabetic sweets
every day now without any problems apart from a gurgling stomach and a small
amount of gas hahaha.

I've checked the low-carb ice creams and it usually lists Sorbital as an
ingredient. I (and you too) am very sensitive to it.

I'm so sensitive that Dentine Ice gum also sends me running to the bathroom.
I used to think I was IBS, now I realize it is a terrible reaction to the
Sorbital. Now, you couldn't pay me to chew a piece of their gum or sample
anything else made with that stuff.
