Do you have other examples of my being rude to others? I'd be
interested in instances in which I was rude without provocation.

Actually, Caleb, your conversation with Neil concerned me, since I
know
he
was responding out of concern for BTM. Yes, many do lose weight on
very
low
calorie diets. But many also gain it back again. You posted the fact
that
most people lose weight 5 times before they lose it permanently. I'm
sure I
was just as concerned with BTM's possible health risks at cutting
suddenly
back to 1500 calories per day as Neil was. That's the issue he might
have
been looking ofr you to address. But you seem to want him to back
down
on
the issue of his particular response if someone tells him they have
been
losing a pound a day. His reaction to that isn't really an issue at
all,
is
it? BTM's health is what is important.

Teachrmama -- I sure agree that BTM's health is most important. But
when I offered mainstream (and supportive, I though) suggestions, Neil
jumped on them with both boots, gratuitously insulting me in the
process.

Well, Caleb, I'm not going to argue with you about it. My perspective on
weight loss this time around has been my health--and I have chosen not to
adopt strategies that might damage my health. I hope BTM adopts a
similar
program, because health is just to precious to ignore. And, yes, I know
that getting the weight off ameliorates a variety of health issues--but
my
bottom line has been "Can I live with this for the rest of my life?" My
opinion may differ. But I do know that my health and fitness are now
reflecting the wisdom of my choice 10 months from that terrible day when
I
found out how vulnerable I really was. I sincerely hope that the
maintenance plan you select will allow you to maintain your loss.

Teachrmama --

I hope it does but I'm not about to drive off a cliff if it doesn't.
As you know there are absolutely no guarantees in life and there are
many, many roads that can lead to a positive outcome -- or even to
disastrous outcomes. (One can overdo exercise and seriously hurt
oneself -- not do enough weight-bearing exercises and increase
osteoporosis, etc., etc.)

My progress and methods please my doctor greatly and I intend to
continue to employ them.

It is remarkable to me, though, that common sense calorie guidelines
-- such as those outlined in the Merck Manual -- should engender such
hostility from some people on this list!

However, it is true what Lincoln said: "If I am right, then I am
right. And if I am wrong, then a thousand angels breathing in my year,
'You are right!' will not make it so."

For a lot of people, the Merck Manual guidelines -- and the ones I am
using -- ARE right!

Keep up your good work!

I have no problems with your choices for you, Caleb. I didn't get concerned
until you made the calorie cutting suggestion to BTM. But I also saw that
you did, then, encourage a visit to a health professional, which I hope BTM
did. I could never maintain weight loss by using the method you are using,
which is why I did not select that method this time around. And I'm very
glad you have a maintenance plan in place, because I think that is the key
to long-lasting success.

It's just a phase. The group will survive. Don't be a total stranger!

I've also discovered that a decent kill-file does a nice job.

If there was more traffic in the group I probably would killfile him.
But it's dead enough right now that he's easy to just mark read most of
the time.

Agreed. It's also the way to deal with name-changing trolls.

Teachrmama --

Regarding your commenting on my referring BTM to check with his
physician: as far as I can see, I have been the most motivated here
(as least for the several months I have been here this time) to have
people to check with their primary care providers. I think if they did
so, they would be a lot healthier and would be following healthier and
more effective regimens than many of them will be adhering to in the
future.

One key to long-lasting success is, of course, getting the weight off
in the first place. And that I am fairly sure I'll be successful with
again. I can sure do that more effectively than can many other
people.

Thanks for your kind thoughts!

Yours,

Caleb
