Default Low Carb Bread ok?

Hey folks...

I bought some 'low carb' bread at the store yesterday. It has 8 grams per
slice, including 5 grams of fiber, for a net carb count of 3 per slice.
This seems to be decent...just curious if anyone has any advice on it?
(stalls, hidden carbs, etc....)

I had a piece this morning with butter, and it was pretty good. Probably
not for most people, but I like "dark, grainy" breads anyway, so I thought
it was yummy.

A weeklong binge brought me 4 extra pounds to deal with...sigh....

Thanks!

As long as you can use it within your allotted carb & calorie count, it is
okay. If you end up wanting to eat real bread, I suggest you discontinue
using it. That hasn't been a problem for me....

I think you just answered your own question. Any "food" whose end
result is a binge - aka "trigger foods" - are things you'd want to steer
clear of, non?

Oops, should have read more carefully... the binge was before the bread,
not after.

mea culpa

I'd be VERY cautious with the bread especially if flour is listed within the
first 3 ingredients.

Historically, there have been quite a few "lite" breads sold in the
supermarkets whose labels mysteriously changed last year to show a whole lot
more carbs than originally listed. These all had wheat flour as the first or
second ingredient. The breads appear to have the same ingredients, taste,
and texture, suggesting that the original labels were not correct.

In particular, it is possible that the fiber has already been deducted from
the carb count.

The other problem which I see with low carb breads that are truly low carb
is this:

In the "Good Old Days" when low carbing meant that you threw away the bun or
bread from your sandwich, ate the filling, and substituted a salad for the
fries, people were cutting a lot of calories out of their diets. However,
the new "low carb" foods are often quite high in calories. For example, a
tiny little "Rollz" hamburger roll is 170 calories. So if you add three of
these low carb breads back into your daily diet you might be keeping your
carbs down, but you are adding in 510 calories a day. Throw in that 170
calorie low carb ice cream pop and a 270 calorie "low carb" bar, and you've
got an additional 950 "low carb" calories That might just be the difference
between weight loss and stall.

Calories still do count when you low carb. You might be able to eat more
than on another kind of diet, but you still need to take in less than you
burn to lose body fat.

thanks for all the responses. I'll experiment a bit, and see how it works
for me. The fiber hasn't been deducted already, so it SHOULD be 3 grams per
slice...but we all know how that goes.

Calories shouldn't be too much of a problem, as I am rarely hungry when I'm
low-carbing. I'm one of those people that has to 'remember' to eat...easy
to go all day with only eating breakfast and a few handfuls of other stuff
throughout the day.

I buy the Atkins bread. have to get it shipped, and its pricey but it is
nice and chewy, and makes nice toast and sandwiches. also tastes like real
bread. some other brands I have tried are not as palatable.
