Default Old Habits & Permanent Records

I've been doing a lot of work lately on sorting and scanning old paperwork (I'm a
TERRIBLE packrat and have boxes of them all over the place -- my goal is to
eventually have most of it on a single CD, and I'm making real headway). In the
process, I'm finding lots of receipts for PC-related things (and occasional small
appliances) from Fry's Electronics over the years. One thing that struck me is
that almost EVERY ONE of those pre-Atkins receipts includes junk food from their
impulse shelves near the checkout stands: Three Musketeers, Rollos, Doritos,
Milky Ways, Hersey Bars, etc. And almost ALWAYS I bought 2-3 of them at a time.
And that was just stuff from the ELECTRONICS store! It's kind of embarrassing to
myself to see how undisciplined I was (not to mention being toally in denial
about how how much crap I was eating).

Have you noticed that the time spent in the grocery store is a lot less? I
think if I only had myself to shop for, I bet it would take me 20 minutes,
tops. Produce---Meats----Dairy and that would be it. I'd hardly ever see
the center isles of the store. Well, except to get pork rinds. And I'm
finding I'm not buying them as much as I used to.

I know how you feel. I don't have old receipts to look at, but when I'm
in the store, I look at all that candy (which I used to be addicted to
but have now completely sworn off) and can hardly believe that I used to
buy several candy bars at a time, so I wouldn't ever have to be without
it. I have even been known to buy the large quantities from Sam's
because I knew that it wouldn't take me long to go through it, and it
was cheaper that way. Now it makes me sick to even think that I used to
eat that much sugar.

But you know, I really enjoy regular food a lot more, now that I've
finally gotten myself off all of the bad stuff.

Ironically, I actually spend *more* time in the grocery store and also spend
more money on food for meals eaten at home (but undoubtedly eat less overall
because now I do all of my own cooking). The explanation, in my case, is
that I used to survive almost exclusively on the following: (1) pick up
fast food; (2) buy frozen meals to cook at home; (3) call in for take-out
orders or home delivery of pizzas. Now I cook all my own meals except for
the rare occasions when I eat out with friends, and I am incorporating a
variety of fresh veggies, fresh fruit, lean meat, natural unsalted nuts
(much harder to locate than the salted, roasted nuts that I used to eat),
and low-fat cheeses (again, harder to locate). So, I unfortunately have not
had the same experience of reducing time in the grocery store -- but I am
eating healthier, losing weight, feeling better, and have had very good BG
results.

Back to what the OP said: Yes, I used to buy candy almost anywhere I
went! -- grocery store, pharmacy, even when I was sitting in the hair
stylist's salon waiting to have my hair done. I have not eaten a piece of
candy (or any other dessert other than fresh fruit) since I was diagnosed in
early June. I also do not feel deprived in any way.

Correction: I intended to say that I undoubtedly "spend" less overall,
*not* "eat" less. Ironically, I am now eating more than I used to -- the
difference is that I am now getting good quality food and no longer eat
bread (except an occasional slice of Ezekiel bread from the health store),
pasta, rice, or potatoes. In terms of quantity, I used to go on "diets"
where I would feel hungry all the time and eventually fail. Now I eat as
much as I want and always have a snack if I am hungry -- but the extra food
consists of lots of fresh veggies, some fresh fruit, and snacks that consist
of things like natural nuts and a piece of cheese where my previous snacks
would have been candy, ice cream (with toppings!), pie, or cake.

Fry's here in the Silicon Valley has one long line for customers that wait
for about 30 cashiers who each handle one customer at a time. As one stands
in this cue, which is about a hundred feet long, one is surrounded on both
sides by displays of impulse-buy items. Most of this is candy. Saffire's
past candy added to computer purchases is quite understandable.

Saving records on CD is an interesting idea. However, most cheap CDs only
last a few years. For something more permanent, you have to buy archival
quality CDs, which cost more. I think Kodak makes them.

That's one advantage of buying online, no temptations at the checkout
counter. :-)
