Sugar Alcohols
Do sugar alcohols affect ketosis?
I am asking because every single time I go to Wal-Mart, there is that tempting section right in the middle of the candy wall that shouts "Sugar Free" tasty goodness. I want to know if eating some of these candies will wreck my diet since they technically don't have sugar in them. They are kind of like diet soda right? Thanks |

Zero to a few grams of carbs in diet soda. Few calories. Have you looked at the calorie count of some of these "safe candies". Nearly 40 years ago, there was a sugarless candy on the market which had an appetite depressant in it. Ayds, I believe. A play on "diet aid". There was the image of the "new diet" where you could lay on the couch and watch TV and eat these "diet candies". Didn't work. Much. This sugar-free candy thing isn't exactly new. Normally, it drops out and then comes back in some form years later. I almost went to the hospital emergency room thinking that I had appendecitus. It was just a reaction to Russel Stover sugarless candy "turtles", those chocolate/caramel/pecan things. The package had 4 of them, and I ate all 4. So, I'd say, sure, go ahead and eat all you want. No problem. [don't know how to make a smiley thing that looks like the devil] -- 1) Eat Till SATISFIED, Not STUFFED... Atkins repeated 9 times in the book 2) Exercise: It's Non-Negotiable..... And they aren't at all like the artificial sweetners in diet soda, which really are zero carb. Sugar alcohols do get metabolized and do cause some rise in blood glucose levels. How much apparently depends on the exact sugar alcohol and the person. The basic premise is that for most people, the rise is not significant. My opinion is some sugar alcohols can be OK, in moderation and provided that you are fairly well along on your LC plan, either losing OK or at maintenance, etc. If you google the newsgroup, you'll find plenty of discussion. |

Thanks There are some good answers already, I'd just point out that Sugar alcohols can cause some bloating and gas in some people, so don't experiment immediately prior to a visit with the Queen. |

Sugar Alcohols
Here is the best source of information I have seen on the topic. The
last half is a survey of the sugar alcohols, some are metabolized some not. It includes some non-sugar alcohols too. The first half includes a discussion of how the atkins products, as an example, have played loose and fast with carb information, including how they handle sugar alcohols they use in their products. No doubt similar caution should be taken with other manufactured "low carb" products from other companies. http://www.mendosa.com/netcarbs.htm |
