Default CLA / Flax Seed Oil?

I'm thinking of supplementing with my low carb diet. I really haven't
been adding anything to it. Just eating greens veggies/salads moslty
along with meat. I also weight lift.

I heard that CLA helps preserve muscle while getting rid of fat -
maybe not the most accurate summary I'm sure. I also heard that the
flax seed would be good for the joints? I know I can purchase the CLA
in gel for tablets and was thinking of getting the flax seed in oil
form. Anyone have any experience with these? Any recommended daily
intake? Thanks for any info.

I eat ground flax seed porridge most days, for the fibre and regularity
benefits. My muscles are building, but who knows whether or not that's
helped by the flax seed! I have no idea about the oil, I'm afraid.

Nicky.

What's CLA? I take flax oil supplements in the evenings, but that's for the
Omega 3 oil properties.

I've been taking a CLA supplement for a few months. However, I have doubts
about the various claims about it.

Here's a website that discusses it:

I took CLA for a while and noticed no difference in anything.

Hmm... Been reading some stuff on CLA in humans and it seems like it
isn't as effective as the tests on mice. In other words it is not very
effective at all.

I heard that flaxseed oil and fish oil were supposed to be good for
you. Essential fatty acids... Just wondering in what form and what
amount I should be looking at.

Anyone try EFA pills? I was thinking of ProEFA but I'm wondering if it
has the amount of EFA you supposedly need.

I take some Omega 3. That is an EFA.
What is ProEFA? It sounds like a brand name.

Yes it is. ProLab makes it. PROLAB - EFA (FLAX/BORAGE/OMEGA-3)

Supposed to have flaxeed, borage and omega-3 oil for what it is worth.
400 mg of each in one capsule. Supposed to take one a day. Just don't
know if that is enough or not. New to this whole EFA thing.

Mathew McConaughey takes CLA (not sure what relevance that has) :-)

Watch your dosage. There's some indication that CLA can provide some
defense against cancer, but some *possible* (yet to be determined)
indication of problems at high dosages:

Also: http://www.ironmagazine.com/review49.html
Other effects - There are a variety of other effects of CLA. On the
positive side, CLA reduces bone inflammation [14] and has a positive
role in bone formation in rats [2]. CLA also appears to improve immune
response in healthy men [15] and protects against end-stage symptoms
of lupus erythematosis, although it accelerates the onset of this
condition [2]. Multiple studies have found CLA to increase markers of
lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress in both healthy and obese
humans, an effect which is not reduced by vitamin E [1-2, 16-17].
Additionally, CLA causes liver steatosis (fat accumulation) in mice
and chicken and liver and kidney enlargement in hamsters despite a
decrease in body weight, and this effect has been attributed to the
t10,c12 isomer [1-2, 18].

CLA seems safe to me (or at least does more good than harm)... but I
think more study is needed.
