Can i kick my weight loss into high gear? And why arent i hungry at all?
I have started finally to feel my clothes get loose, and I am going into
week 3 of induction now... perhaps if I started doing cardio I could really kick start my loss? I seem to be loosing no discernable weight on the scale, but noticeably on my body. what do you think would be good for me right now. I am eating FAR less than even 1 week ago now as well, I just don't have the appetite (perhaps 300-500 calories a day only), but I do feel great. Its odd that I am eating so much less though, isn't it? I mean, I felt the cravings to away before, but I am still an average sized guy (5ft 6in), so should I be forcing myself to eat? Thanks. |

Ketosis is a natural appetite suppressant, so it's no surprise that you're not hungry. I went through bouts of this as well, but my appetite eventually returned. These phases are not uncommon and you won't always see a steady loss on the scale... loss of inches is just as important. It may be a good idea to also go by the measuring tape. You can't rush your body on a whim... it's going to do what it does. The best thing to do is follow the plan you're on methodically and with patience. I think that it's best to try to eat something every few hours... even if it's not a large quantity. Atkins did say not to go more than six hours without eating to help keep blood sugars stable. The also body requires energy for metabolic functions... you need the fuel to burn your body fat. A few days of eating little won't be too troublesome, but making it a continuing thing may not be such a good idea. 300-500 calories is FAR too little for any extended period of time. Atkins emphasizes gaining good eating habits... not just weightloss. You may want to transition into the Ongoing Weight Loss phase and start adding an extra 5 grams of LC vegetables per day. It might kick-start your appetite. ~miette |

Can i kick my weight loss into high gear? And why arent i hungry at all?
Well, this was the one that I couldn't ignore. Yes, Steve, you need to
see a doctor. The type of doctor you need to see depends on if you are being accurate and truthful in your postings or if you just enjoy lying. If you are true and accurate in your posting, for example: "I am eating FAR less than even 1 week ago now as well, I just don't have the appetite (perhaps 300-500 calories a day only), but I do feel great." (posted Friday, December 05, 2003 8:44 PM) then you need to see a Physician because you may well be dead right now. Based on a posting where you mention your weight and height, "I am five foot 6 inches and weigh about 190 lbs. . ." (posted Saturday, November 08, 2003 8:59 PM), assuming you are around 35 years old - no reason, I picked the number out of the air - you need 1,619 calories a day just to maintain your BMR (keeps your heart beating, lungs pumping) . If you really are eating only 300 - 500 calories a day at 190#, you've long ago collapsed and have been taken to the hospital. I hope your room has internet access. If, however, you aren't being truthful and accurate in your postings, the doctor you need to see is a psychologist/psychiatrist. Anyone who finds their pleasure in lying to strangers definitely needs a cranial adjustment. Because I hate to think poorly of people, I'm going to believe a third option, and that is that you just keep lousy records and are eating way more than you are recording. |

Visible ill health from eating too few calories does not happen that quickly. It takes 8 to 12 weeks for death to occur from *total* starvation (zero calories) so there is no way you can assume someone isn't telling the truth because they haven't collapsed and been hospitalized after eating 300-500 calories a day for a week. http://www.merck.com/mrkshared/mmanu...hapter2/2b.jsp Is it healthy? Not a chance! And the original poster should eat quite abit more if he wants to stay healthy. |

If you mean you're eating 300 - 500 calories a day then what you need to do is eat more. You cannot lose fat faster by cutting your calories so low. What you end up doing is losing muscle tissue and in the long run becoming quite ill. (Don't forget, your heart is a muscle.) You need to eat a certain number of calories to maintain basic body functions (BMR). Eating below that level will eventually cause your body to slow it's metabolism to conserve energy. Slower metabolism = slower loss = need to eat even fewer calories to keep up weight loss. You would be much much much better off eating sufficient calories and exercising. That will keep your metabolism at full steam. Nuts and oils are two good calorie dense foods that you could add to your diet to increase your calories without adding tons of food. -- Jeri 265/189/120 Atkins since 11/5/01 "Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right." |

If you really are eating only 300 - 500 calories a day at 190#, you've long ago collapsed and have been taken to the hospital. I hope your room has internet access. Well, he wouldn't collapse and die unless he's been eating that low for a pretty long time. The body luckily is not that much of a pansy. People can fast or eat super-low calorie diets and survive. It's tough on the body for more than a few days definitely, but death within a week is overkill (excuse the pun) ;-) I would bet though that he really is eating more calories. I mean, 300 calories could be just 3 extra large eggs and a half oz. of cheddar cheese, total 316 calories. I would say he needs to eat *much more* to get his metabolism into a non-starvation mode. Starving the body and doing a lot of cardio would be a very bad plan unless you want a nice warm hospital bed in a short time. Steven, try www.global-fitness.com/bmr.html to estimate your BMR and what amount of calories you should be eating to keep your weight loss going well. A blurb from the Atkins site describing lack of hunger and how starving is bad - also mentions how 700-800 calories is only half the needed calories for an average woman. You can guess Atkins would be alarmed that you are eating 300-500 calories on his plan. http://atkins.com/Archive/2001/12/15-115369.html "Hunger Is Reduced One of the most attractive features of Atkins is that lipolysis, and the resulting production of ketones (if you have triggered the secondary process of ketosis), helps suppress your appetite. Lipolysis—and the resulting state of ketosis if your carbohydrate level is low enough—has certain metabolic similarities to fasting. In either case, after the first 48 hours the body suppresses hunger and appetite diminishes. But there is a significant difference from fasting. A prolonged fast can be dangerous and has one severe metabolic disadvantage: The body not only burns fat for energy, it also burns protein. This means that it burns off some of the body’s lean muscle tissue, which is clearly not desirable. Research has shown that on an eating plan where you are in lipolysis, and the carbohydrate intake is low enough to result in ketosis, virtually no lean tissue is lost, only fatty tissue.4-9 And that’s why for extremely overweight individuals it is possible to be in lipolysis—and at the carbohydrate level that creates ketosis—for six months to a year, and confidently know that there will be no ill effects of any kind.10 People who’ve been burdened with excess pounds for a long time or who have tried many weight-loss programs often find it very nearly impossible to drop many pounds unless they’re in lipolysis. There are people who are unable to lose weight, even on 700 or 800 balanced calories a day. That’s less than half the normal caloric intake of an average woman. And yet the pounds finally peeled off when these folks began to do Atkins, even though their meal plans comprised foods totaling even more calories." Sarah Jahn |

I am fighting a pretty bad chest cold, and on monday i went to the doctor, who is fully aware of what is happening with me nutritional wise. of course, you will assume i am lying about that as well, and i dont have it in me to scan a copy or my prescription. |

Sorry you are sick. I hate to say it but I think your recent eating habits, if indeed as low-cal as you as you are estimating, could have weakened your body to the point of inviting infection. Take better care of yourself ok? :-) And get some rest. Sounds like you need it. Mom-speak: Remember, lots of fluids! Bed rest! and... EAT WELL! Sarah Jahn |

I think you're overreacting. I have days when I eat far below my BMR, on Sundays when I have lunch with my family sometimes that is the only meal I eat that day. When I'm working at my really physical job, sometimes I skip breakfast because I have to be there so early, I eat a really quick, small lunch, then come home and I'm so tired I go to bed right away without dinner. I know it's not healthy if I did this every day, but I end up getting back to normal the next day. Steve's appetite will return and he'll be fine. You can go quite a while without eating very much and not die. -- -Michelle Levin (Luna) http://www.mindspring.com/~lunachick http://www.mindspring.com/~designbyluna |
