Question from a lurker...
I've been using Diet Power to keep track of my calories, and today,
instead of walking outdoors, I used the treadmill. Diet Power says I burned more calories walking on the treadmill at 2.2 mph for 35 minutes than I did walking outside 3.0 mph for 35 minutes. I don't get it. Does anyone have an explanation, or is this just some weird glitch in the program? TIA, Nicole (still too embarassed to be posting my weight!) ---- To email me use nicoleschmitz*AT*charter*.*net --- |

Does the same for me, more than twice as many calories burned for the same time & distance on the treadmill vice just street walking. Guess I should buy a treadmill )! Seriously, it sounds like a glitch. Why don't you ask the folks at http://www.dietpower.com/tech.htm & maybe they'll fix it (just don't hold your breath, the typo on peanut calories that they themselves identify in the manual as a typo has stayed in there through several revisions of the program). |

Does anyone have an explanation, or is this just some weird glitch in the program? TIA, Nicole (still too embarassed to be posting my weight!) ---- From the Diet Power help screen: Errors in the Exercise Dictionary Two errors were identified too late for correction in this version of DietPower: · The burn rate for treadmilling without arm exercise is more than twice as high as ordinary walking. Until we fix this error, we advise logging such workouts as just plain walking. · Stair-climbing machines seem to burn the same number of calories no matter how long the workout. We suggest 1) assuming that the 20-minute default figure is correct, 2) pro-rating your calorie burn accordingly, and 3) logging the calories as having been burned in some other form of exercise. (A calorie is a calorie, no matter how you burn it off.) Example: If DietPower says you burn 300 calories in 20 minutes of Climbmaster stair climbing, but your workout was only 10 minutes, then you actually burned 150 calories. To log the calories, specify some other exercise¾say, running or swimming¾and adjust the number of minutes you report until it shows 150 calories burned. Copyright © 1992-2002 by DietPower, Inc. All rights reserved. As another poster said, the peanut error in the food log has been there forever so don't hold your breath waiting for this to get fixed. I also use Diet Power and I find that it does an okay job with the exercise, but tends to underestimate compared to sites like caloriesperhour.com If I find the discrepancy too much, I do an estimate and make a custom entry. Personally I'd prefer it underestimate my calories burned rather than overestimate (something we practice in HMR). Jenn (also freezing in Wisconsin!) jennifer (at) resurvey (dot) org |

Question from a lurker...
Thanks Jenn and Bill. I failed to read the Help. :0) I just thought
maybe there was something different about treadmilling because of the steady speed, but even so, I couldn't justify THAT large of a difference in calories burned. So now I know... use the regular walking until (If?) they fix it. Now the peanut thing... I'd better look it up. I had an ounce of dry roasted today Nicole On Mon, 22 Sep 2003 19:54:04 -0500, "Jennifer Austin" wrote: "Nicole Schmitz {Freezing in Wisconsin}" wrote in message ... Like the other replies said, there are some problems in the Dietpower database, in particular the one you've discovered. I believe somewhere in the help they acknowledge the problem. Why they don't just *fix* it is beyond me. I just do custom exercises anyway. I find the exercise dictionary is pretty useless. -dissonance |
