Are you aware that walmart sells wide and very cushioned bicycle

too much cushion causes problems too. large seats rub the legs.

Well, they do sell biking briefs for both men and women. I would
definiately recommend bike shorts and a nice saddle. Both are worth the
investment. Check out performancebike.com. I prefer the "elite" ones
but they carry lots of brands. I use a Terry Liberator saddle. I'm not
sure how their men's saddles run -- perhaps the Terry Fly would be a
starting point? I think that Terry saddles are made by Sella Italia, fwiw.

I just found them 18.00 a pair. ouch for 5 pairs a week (G)
I am ok now but when the rides get longer I am gonna have to spend more money
(G) but rain gear first.

That's a good point Steve. I find that the first few days or week is the
worst - very sore and tender. After that, areas back there do seem to
toughen somewhat.

it's getting better but my crotch still hurts very day after about 4 weeks. I
have seen liniment to help on online bike stores but I bet there is something
over the counter that will help the soreness.

No experience liniment wise. Have you tried adjusting the angle of the
seat? Sounds like it could be a bit front high and exerting pressure as
you lean forward. Try tipping the seat forward and riding for a few days
or a week to see if it helps.

seats are definately a very personal thing and theres no decent seat for
all ... try talking to local bike shop - ive heard of shops that let you
try several different seats for not a great deal of cash ... also
increasing milage on a couple of rides per week will help to get you
more accustomed to your final seat of choice

I got used to the Gell seat but one part really hurts. more skin then anything
else. So today I put back on the thin harder seat I got with the bike. it may
help I will know tomorrow. the pressure of the seat does not seem to be a
problem. skin rubbing or pinching or something is.
right now I don't know how many miles I ride. I bet about 10 one way and 4 or
5 back home. takes me 42 minutes to get to work and I am not going slow.
but I know I really need shorts or the bicycling underware if I am going to
increase my miles. I don't want to do a 20 mile ride in my Jeans.
but i am broke right now and need rain gear first.

did that and it helped but I get a slight feeling of sliding forward with only a
slight tilt. I put the thinner racing seat back on today and rode home seems ok
but i got a flat so I won't know till I ride to work tomorrow.
the pain is where my leg joins my body. not sure if it is rubbing or what.
cycling shorts would help too.

If its rubbing skin and pinching that is so bothersom - the get some
biking shorts or at least some sports shorts - ones that are tight and
go about 3/4 the way down the thigh. Best to get a material that has
a good wicking factor (will keep the sweat off you and keep you from
chafing)

You can get cheap ones at walmart - although they aren't the best at
wickign the sweat away, but they can get you by. If you aren't
comfortable wearing the tighties - then just put a pair of regular
workout shorts overtop.

Immensely. The more money you put between your crotch and the bicycle
seat, the more comfortable it is. Cheap bike shorts are a waste of
money. Get a good pair of Pearl Izumi shorts. Attack PRT's are good.
I've seen them anywhere between $49.99 and $59.99. The padded
underwear is useless. Also, do not wear underwear under your bike
shorts. The only thing you should wear in between you and your shorts
is some Bag Balm (see below).

When I seriously commuted to work on a bike for the first time
(working at a bike shop), a CAT 1 racer gave me some great advice for
the burning crotch. Bag Balm or medicated Vaseline. I apply about
three fingers worth of Bag Balm to the area where my thigh meets my
crotch and in between, before every ride. I won't bother your bike
shorts, but don't try this with regular clothes. My wife tells me it
leaves that area of my body very soft and supple.

A good seat is also a must. Many, and I mean MANY, swear by the
Brooks B-17 leather saddle. After a relatively short break-in period,
the Brooks forms to your body and provides the ultimate ride. People
who tour and spend 10 hours a day for weeks at a time on a bike saddle
ride a Brooks. There has to be something to that. The B-17 goes for
about $60.

Lastly, rec.bicycles.misc and rec.bicycles.tech are the best place on
usenet for this kind of stuff. www.sheldonbrown.com is the best place
on the web. Sheldon has written more on bicycles than most people
care to read.
