Oh, you crusty professor, you!

As I recall, it was you who started this thread, tut-tutting someone
else's usage. Look who is calling who "crusty" :-)

Steve

Now, now! Shouldn't it be "look who is calling WHOM 'crusty'"?
(Laughing hysterically -- thinks this is really funny -- can't wait
to show English teacher friends -- thinks this may explain lack of
social life.)

Q.E.D.

Steve

Oh, good lord -- doesn't QED have something to do with proofs in geometry,
or something like that? I am an English teacher. That means I never
actually passed geometry (and barely scraped by in all my other math
classes). I know I sound dense -- but are you saying I proved the reason
for my lack-of-a-social-life is my grammar obsession? Okay -- I'll buy
that -- but PLEASE remember to get your future allusions from the realm of
English, not the underworld of evil math (if you are talking to me, that
is). Actually, I appreciate the new bit of info. I will now throw it
around as if I had always known it, and look condescendingly at those who
don't understand. ;-)

Default Regardless /Irregardless ...........

"Regardless" already means "without regard" - saying "irregardless"
is, in effect, creating a double negative - so "irregardless" really
means "WITH" regard. Sooooo annoying... Kalish
p.s. but I love "ruthless" - what is the opposite of being "ruthless"?
"That politician was soooo ruth..."

Irregardless

Irregardless is not a word. Regardless *is* a word.

Pronunciation: "ir-i-'gärd-l&s
Function: adverb
Etymology: probably blend of irrespective and regardless
Date: circa 1912
nonstandard : REGARDLESS
usage Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th
century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of
usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about
it is that "there is no such word." There is such a word, however. It is still
used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited
prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way
from general acceptance.

How about "The phrase 'a lot' is made of 2 words". Yes, it's a little
longer, but it gets around the problem nicely.
