Default 2-1-07 -- Day 32 of 100 Days -- still 19 pounds gone

2-1-07
265/246/200 Still 19 pounds gone
Day 32 of 100 Days

I got on my scales this morning and still weighed 246 (actually, the
indicator probably would have gone little bit higher had I let it).
Yesterday, no exercise - I came home late but today is my day to go up
my little hill, do push-ups, crunchies, etc.

"Well begun is half done," said Franklin, and I now have 31 days of
good behavior behind me. Yesterday I had about 1200 calories,
including a double-cheeseburger from Burger King on the way home (at
9:45 PM). When I got home I looked very closely at a can of soup but I
put it away. (I did have a pinch of tuna before giving a dollop of
tuna to our cat.)

I'm almost at a third through my 100 Days and I have felt no
discomfort at all - more simple pleasure at being able to follow the
program and lose the weight. I've made an appointment with my
physician for an evaluation in two months and expect to have
improvement in all major areas of health that are weight-related.
Probably this won't help my eyesight but it should do something for
hypertension, etc.

I remember jogging long distances (when I was younger) and sometimes I
would tell myself to continue running to a point I could see in the
distance, and then when I got to that point I would walk for a few
minutes before picking out another point, or maybe even keep on
jogging to another point in the distance. Anything to "keep on keeping
on." Having a set time to aim for - 100 Days - is useful for me in
losing weight. One I have "well begun" a 100 Day program, it's usually
not difficult to maintain it. Maintaining task focus (through a low-
calorie, fairly rapid weight loss approach) makes the task of losing
weight easier. Not painless, but easier. And yet I sure don't feel any
hungrier now than I did when I was constantly eating and taking in
calories.

For me hunger is present when I am aware that I CAN eat something. But
if I know that I CAN'T eat it, my hunger is less. I sure am a lot less
hungry now than I would be if I arrived in an all-you-can-eat
breakfast buffet line with a huge plate - or better yet, two huge
plates.

I hope everyone has a great month ahead and that everyone can find and
follow a program that works to bring them to health!

Yours truly,

Caleb

Default 2-1-07 -- Day 32 of 100 Days -- still 19 pounds gone

Congratulations, Caleb. The low-calorie has always been good for me. I
would not call it diet, though. I prefer saying that I have stopped
overeating. From October 2006 my daily calorie intake was about 3000
calories until I reached my personal record of 197 pounds. 44 days ago
I've had enough. I then decreased my daily calorie intake gradually
starting at 2000 to see the results I would get. In the last 11 days,
my average is 1530. I weighted 181 pounds this morning, a decrease of
16 pounds in 44 days. I look forward to leaving the 180's pounds and
read the magic number 179 on the scale!

I keep track of my daily calorie intake by listing everything I eat or
drink.

Mike -- Great for you! Your progress is terrific! I'm sure that very,
very soon you will wake up and break 180. EXCELLENT!!!

It's so easy for me to eat a heck of a lot more than 3000 calories a
day. 1530 calories a day seems a great goal for you.

Keep going strong!

Yours,

Caleb

Hi Caleb. I'm OK with 1500 or 1600 calories a day. This morning, for
the first time in about 3 months, I hit 180 pounds. I just weighted
myself, 16 hours later, and weight 183... But it's all right, I don't
let myself panicking with numbers. I just focus on the lower number I
get. Hopefully, I can read 179 by the end of the week. Surely, I
would like to get results faster, but I'm thinking that if the weight
comes off fast, I can get it back fast, too. So the slower the loss is
going, the better.

What do you think of the importance of getting lots of fiber? This
morning, my breakfast was All Bran Buds with water, pretty disgusting,
though. A cup gives me 36 grams of fiber for 210 calories. Adding up
the fibers in the Lima beans, I took more than 40 grams of fibers. I'm
thinking that getting out of this garbage inside will help me
progressing. Am I right to think like that?

Mike -- what you're doing is working great! Super!

Let me plug in a few numbers for you. Given a baserate of 170 pounds
(erring a bit on the conservative side), the following calories taken
in in the course of a day, you probably can expect roughly the
following loss over the following time periods:

Day's Pounds Lost Lost Lost in 30 days
Calories Today in one week
0 0.6 4.4 18.94
500 0.5 3.4 14.66
600 0.5 3.2 13.80
700 0.4 3.0 12.94
800 0.4 2.8 12.09
900 0.4 2.6 11.23
1000 0.3 2.4 10.37
1100 0.3 2.2 9.51
1200 0.3 2.0 8.66
1300 0.3 1.8 7.80
1400 0.2 1.6 6.94
1500 0.2 1.4 6.09
1600 0.2 1.2 5.23
1700 0.1 1.0 4.37
1800 0.1 0.8 3.51
1900 0.1 0.6 2.66
2000 0.1 0.4 1.80
2100 0.0 0.2 0.94
2200 0.0 0.0 0.09

The above numbers (based on your being a male) indicate that at 170
pounds, you probably need about 13 by 170 calories a day to maintain
your weight -- hence, about 2210 calories. Given a daily intake of
1700 calories, you are in a deficit of about 500 calories a day, and
that equates to about a loss of a pound a week, and a little more than
than 4 pounds a month. (This does not take into account exercise,
etc.)

About fiber -- I don't know. Several very good pluses with it. I
believe it's been associated with lower colorectal cancer, lower
cholesterol, a greater feeling of being filled up, fewer hemerrhoids,
etc. (I'd imagine also fewer gallstones but I've never seen that
mentioned.) Overall, fiber is pretty healthy.

About weighing -- I don't know if you had a chance to read my views on
balance beam scales, but this is a system I've used since 1999. I get
on the scale each morning but I do not move the indicator if it
doesn't show a lower number. If it has a higher number, I just don't
move it. I know that I am on a pretty calorie restrictive diet and
that I am losing weight, even if water and roughage caused weight
fluctuations don't show it. So, the only motion that my indicator has
is to the left, to reflect a lower weight. For me this is very
motivating as every morning there is the chance the indicator will be
lower and no chance that it will be higher.

However, you seem to be doing great, Mike! Super! Keep doing what
you're doing!

Yours truly,

Caleb
