Default Week 56 report - huge stall, gained weight, getting depressedsigh

I gained 0.2 kg = 0.4 lb this week, bringing my weight back up to 87.8 kg =
193.2 lb. At this rate I will (literally) never get to goal...

This is my 2nd gain in 4 weeks, and brings my weight 0.2 kg *higher* than it
was when I got back to Japan a month ago.

My rolling 4 week weight loss average has gone slightly *negative* now for
the first time ever.

This is by and far the largest stall ever for me and the first time I've
ever gone month-to-month with an actual weight GAIN.

I'm very frustrated.

And I've continued to be so good too!

I have never gone off my diet even once. And this past week my daily
calories have been a very good 1528 calories/day average.

I've been varying what I've been eating. And I've been very good with my
daily exercise, taking "power walks" along the river ever day.

I wonder what is going wrong....

The ONLY thing I've added to my diet lately that I hadn't previously been
eating are these 15 calorie cups of "orange flavored crunchy ice" they sell
in the convenience stores here. They have a valencia orange flavoring and
are sweetened with aspartame and sucralose (and are very refreshing on hot
days). I usually have 2 or 3 a day and faithfully record the 30-45 calories
used. Can something like that adversely affect weight loss regardless of the
very small number of calories involved?

Anyway, looking on the bright side, I'm still down 82 lb so far...

I think you're trying to get more accuracy out of the scale than
it can really deliver.

My rolling 4 week weight loss average has gone slightly *negative* now for

Rolling averages are the best way to track it. Far more
meaningfull than daily readings.

This is by and far the largest stall ever for me and the first time I've

Stalls happen. No one wants them. Everyone prays they won't
see one. Few are ever lucky enough to not see one. But stalls
happen and they aren't always a sign that you're doing anything
wrong.

I'm very frustrated.

Those two lines were trimmed together to show that someone can
be very successfull and be frustrated anyways. Frustration comes
unbidden right or wrong.

More to lose, faster to lose it. Less to lose, slower to lose it. At
some point the level of success gets so high the amount left to
lose means slower loss and at some point the random flucations
mean a stall. Down 82 so far, remember that.

I do not lose as well when I eat sugar or sweeteners, and I think it is
probably your body saying you are getting close to what it thinks it wants
to weigh, I have been on a stall more or less for around a year and haven't
gone off except for 3 days in all these weeks, just keep trying things and
keep, perhaps if you have a glass of water before your icy it might help,
good luck

Hang in there big fella! :-) 82 pounds is a LOT to have lost. Perhaps
your body needs to take a rest for a couple of weeks.

Thanks, Doug. When I saw it was a note from you I was afraid I was going to
get a talk about carbs.

Switching from one plan to another for a while does tend to work as
a stall buster, so there's always the option. ;^) Says a very biased
low carb fan. Then again just plain continuing to do what has worked
for you does tend to work as a stall buster, and down 82 says it all
about what has been working for you.

That is pretty tough, man!

Between reading this and a few other posts, I'm thinking I barely know
what a stall is... actually I'm just having to mentally adjust to what I
think of the "3rd sequence" of weight loss... after the initial 3 or 4 lbs
of water weight, and then a lovely couple days of 1-2 lbs/day (still water
weight? Dunno...) it's time for me to hit the real world where 1lb/week or
so is the (hopefully usually makable) goal. Even 3-4 days at one weight
feels like a lot to me the moment, clearly I need to adjust my
expectations.

So your mental toughness and inspiration is both a warning and an
inspiration!

Kirk, 227/214/180 (actually for all my blog bemoaning of being at 214.5
"since" Monday, and then up to 215 yesterday, I did reach a "new low" of
214 today. So I should be very cheerful, I'm still going gangbusters,
relatively speaking, even if I don't have the amazing ease of weightloss
of my youth.)

ARG Plateaus!! they are what lead a lot of "losers" to just quit..

DON'T it's frustrating, it's a pain, it's totally unfair, but it happens to
most of us!

Keep working at it, keep trying stuff and it'll work!

Well Doug, look at this as practice for living maintaining your weight loss. What you lose on, and what you eventually will be maintaining on, are very close to each other by the time you get to a "normal" weight. You do not get the lovely "going down graph", you live with the graph that shows a rather ragged straight line. I empathize, because the first year back on program I kept detailed records as you are now. I have a journal from an entire 365 days, written. I can look at what foods I ate in weeks where I lost well. I look at what I started out eating (a lot) and losing (a lot). To what I can have now. I did deliberately take it very slow, so I can maintain on about 2000 calories daily if I exercise, or 1700 roughly if I don't. But I always exercise unless I am sick.

Get off that nutty idea you have that there is an end to this. So what if you lose this month or not, do something different and you will be Gaining Every Month. This is the unpalatable truth, and the reason there are so few of us with years of maintaining a normal weight after being obese. Have a great day!

Take note, I am also up a bit. I will be down again in two weeks.
