No, I wouldn't think you were nutty, just observant. ;-)

Very true. I live close to San Francisco, and I don't care for it as

a
city, though most people love it. I don't like all the hills,

traffic,
etc., but the people are fine and it's just a matter of personal
preference. :-)

Yes -liking or disliking it is one thing. It's different if I say "I

went
to SF and everyone there wore purple shoes, they have no style"

Wouldn't you
think I was nutty?

I don't want to belabor it, Myra, but you've made some really
insulting and inaccurate statements, owing to having made such overly
broad generalizations about a place you don't spend much time in or
getting to know. What you've described is nothing like the NY I've
lived in for 50 years.

It may not be the best place, but it's not drab, colorless, fashion
free, lacking variety or quality of foods or anything else.

Isn't it possible for two people to have two entirely different
experiences in New York? Myra wasn't describing you as being drab,
colorless, lacking anything, etc. She was describing her experience of
New York. She has no reason to lie. Anyone could come to my town and
say something less than flattering about it, but if I like it and a lot
of other people like it, who cares?

Marsha/Ohio

Sure it's possible, but the broad generalization and authority with
which it was stated irked me.

Sue me.

She wasn't "wrong", just has a different view than yours. She's
obviously been there more than once, with most of her family being
there. Again, why would she have any reason to lie? There was a recent
discussion on rec.travel about Toronto. One person, who lived there,
found it absolutely boring, not much to do, not many redeeming
qualities. However, others found it to be a wonderful city, full of
great architecture and things to do. No one was wrong or right. It's
just a different point of view, not to be taken personally.

First of all, she *was* wrong because she made broad, sweeping
statements as fact based upon her limited time spent upon the city.

Second, this conversation is just not worth pursuing.

Every Diner has it's own personality. Some are great---others, not so
hot. In The Majestic Diner in Atlanta, I complained about a steak being
so tough as to be inedible. The owner/cook said, You want tender meat?
Go to Kroger!"

Or, also in Atlanta, there's the Silver Grill, family owned and operated
since 1960. They specialize in down home Southern cooking of the very
best. Incredible fried chicken, country fried steak, fresh veggies,
pecan pie....all you can eat for six bucks.

There's a Diner owned by a Greek family whose menu is six pages
long---everything from the basic Diner fare to Pasta Primavera and
Mousaka.
They have baked-on-the-premises goodies from eclairs to cream pies,
Danish pastry to Baclava.

For the down-and dirty after-the-bars-close breakfast, there's the
"Awful Waffle", a renegade Waffle House where your steak and eggs will
be served by Big Bertie, pit stained greying uniform, two inch long blue
acrylic nails and a gold front tooth with a diamond chip.

Diners are an Adventure in Eating, American style. You pays yer money
and takes yer chances.....
