Default Strawberries

I was shopping at Sam's Club recently, just picking up a couple
produce items. I was getting tomatoes and was planning on picking up
some blueberries or raspberries.

When I got there, they were out of both! So, on impulse, I picked up
some strawberries instead. I was wary though, I didn't know their carb
content. I suspected they were fairly high.

I was suprised to find that at least according to the
http://www.atkins.com carb counter, strawberries have LESS net carbs
than blueberries!!! (But more than raspberries).

Excellent!

I love strawberries. I like to freeze them and then eat them frozen 1-2 at
a time.

Atkins lists blueberres, blackberries and strawberries
as the first berries to try because they are lowest
carbs. That would also apply to cranberries if they
weren't so tart they are almost uniformly served with
added sugar. It will also apply to the other types
of wild berries from other parts of the world.

Bilberries, lingonberries, gooseberries, thimbleberries,
you name it. They should all be low enough carb to be
eaten when your level is in the 30-35 range. Berries
come near nuts near the start of the carb ladder.

Raspberries, boyenberries and some other types have
been selectively bred for added sweetness for a long
time. As a result they are on the list with the other
types of fruit.

Looking at all of the types of berries listed above,
the ones I've liked the best are bilberries. I've
only had bilberry in preserves in small portions
because of the added sugar, but the stuff is
wonderfull. Bilberries grow natively in Europe so
they are popular from Poland through Scotland.
Now I want to grow my own so I can eat them like
blueberries. Does anyone know where in the US I can
get rootstock for them? Per some google searches
and some discussion on rec.gardens.edible:

"Bilberry is the common name of Vaccinium myrtillus,
sometimes called Creeping Blueberry. Some people call
American huckleberries bilberries, but generally it
is the European shrub that carries this name."

Now I've got the Latin name to ask after and everything.
Special order time as soon as I find a source and
instructions on when to plant them in zone 5a.

Ok you have to be the stupidest person on earth if you think I could go up
to 1000 people and ask them if eating strawberries would make you fat. In
fact, I would ask 1000 Doctors, and nutritionists, those specializing in low
carb....

"So, Dr, if he had been including a cup of sliced strawberries EVERY DAY for
the last 20 years as part of his daily diet, this is the cause of all the
fat accumulation, RIIIIGGGHHHHT????"

You are slipping, that was a bad misinterpretation of the facts of the post
before your usual, nasty auto-reply. Amateur.

It would be better to find out what type of ecosystem the plants prefer
prior to ordering the plants. People come to Central and West Texas and try
to plant shrubs, etc., that would be better off left in Ohio. Every spring,
the retailers push Azaleas on an unsuspecting public here and of course the
vast majority of Azaleas cannot be grown here--or barely sustained. Our pH
is too high (say around 9) and the soil mostly alkaline. Oh, Herculean
efforts can be made--and are made--by botanical gardens, but for most
people, it just won't work. If you want a plant to grow and thrive, you
have to try and recreate its "home" territory.
