The reason the list seems limited, is that there are truly very few, if any,
"negative calorie" foods. I see apples on that list, but honestly, do you
think you use 100 calories to eat one apple? Celery could be one of the
foods you are looking for, but you won't last long eating celery and
lettuce. You need real food, protein, fat, some carbs in order to be
healthy and feel good. You're a human, not a rabbit.

Maybe water -- if you have to walk to get it that would be negative
calories, right? :-)

Stop looking for miracle foods and learn to eat proper portions, and get
moving. Spend a couple of days HONESTLY recording everything you eat. Then
figure the calories you're taking in. You'll see where the changes need to
be, if you are honest with yourself.

Seriously, Melissa is correct. Portion control. Food logs (I use my
Palm but others here use spreadsheets or fitday.com).

Years ago, in the late 1970s, a neighbor of ours went on a carrot diet.
I don't know if it was the current fad or what. Anyway, she
apparently followed the diet very well. Too well. She turned orange.
She went to her doctor about it. He said don't eat so many carrots! :-)

I'm not sure if she lost weight doing this or not.

Yup, they sell those and deep fried Snickers bars at the state fair
around here. Yikes!

Default Worst "Food" Imaginable

Let's pull this into a separate thread. I'm fascinated by the concepts of
the stuff people will actually put in their mouths. (Fascinated in the
same way as when I watch operations on TV or can't look away from a car
wreck.)

Can anyone top Melissa's contribution, below?

Negative Calorie Foods

Croissants,
french fries
potato chips
deep fried twinkies
cornbread
mashed potatoes
doughnuts

.... there are more, but there are other foods of which I can't think of
the positives about ;-)

I'll add three of the more horrific ones I've encountered:

chili cheese fries (it makes my mouth slimy to THINK about those)
sausage biscuit gravy (I always decline when my Mom makes it on the
grounds that SOMEONE needs to be able to do the CPR)
deep crust meat-lover's pizza from Pizza Hut

But now tell the truth: do deep-fried twinkies really exist? Or is that
just a dietary boogie-man?

Yep, they exist. They are the new Fair Food in our area, but I have heard
that they have had them in the South for years. You can even buy a "machine"
to make them. I saw it at Wal-Mart. Blech...twinkies are horrible to begin
with. To batter and then deep fry them sounds perfectly awful.

I'll add three of the more horrific ones I've encountered:

Canned meat - Spam, Clik, and any derivative thereof.

chili cheese fries (it makes my mouth slimy to THINK about those)

Then you wouldn't like poutine - french fries, drenched in gravy with
cheese curds melting on the top.

Apparently, a popular choice of the French. A artery stopper for the restr
of us.

Cheers!

Alex

OH, and include vienna sausages. shudder

Oh, I've had those up at the in-laws. That was considered "meat" at
one of their meals.

Like I said, I've read all kinds of research on the subject of
negative calorie foods, and the fact remains, they are not a myth. For
every Harvard graduate who says so, you can find 10 other Yale
graduates who disagree. It's the same as saying eggs are healthy /
eggs are unhealthy. Research can prove anything. However, the concept
here is very simple: It takes your body more calories to digest some
food items than that food item provides. Are you suggesting that this
isn't a possibility? I'm a little bit confused on your opinion of
negative calorie foods.

It was disproven years ago.
It's only the first couple of bites of some of these foods that are
"negative calorie" -- it takes more calories to get digestion started.
Once the digestive processes are started, none of them take more
calories to digest than they contain.

Zucchini are packed with calories. You can eat them
and become quite fat!

Not quite true. According to the USDA National Nutrient Database, one cup,
raw, sliced (113g) has 18 calories. One cup slices boiled (who would do
that to a poor zucchini?) is 28 calories. I'd have to try pretty hard to
get fat on them.

Can you tell it's one of my favorite veggies? :-)

You've read all kinds of research but came here to get a list of them?

Research can prove anything. However, the concept
here is very simple: It takes your body more calories to digest some

You are CLOSE to getting it. Step back a bit from the label "negative
calorie" and let's talk about what foods will make it easier to lose fat
if you eat them. The answer contains the same foods you're talking about,
but not for the "negative calorie" reason, but because they tend to be
high in fiber and high in nutrients and not calorie dense and if you eat
them you're probably displacing other foods that are MORE calorie dense
and perhaps lacking in nutrients and fiber so they are less satieting.

I'm a little bit confused on your opinion of negative calorie foods.

You've got a theory in your mind and you desperately want to believe
it. My advice is to learn quite a lot more about how the human body works
and then you'll be able to make informed choices based on knowledge rather
than blind faith in gurus.

Wendy

Are you crazy? LOL

Negative calorie foods are a reality. True, I don't think an apple
could be negative calorie either, but is it so unbelievable that some
foods take more energy to burn than they provide? If I ate my cotton
shirt right now, do you think my body would digest it using fewer
calories than it gets from the shirt itself?

You gotta be kidding me.
