Low-Carbing & Pregnant
Hi,
I am a lurker on this group but read all the posts religiously :-) I have lost 33lbs since the beginning of December low-carbing (196 to 163). To lose this weight I haven't really been eating many carbs. I have stuck mainly to the induction phase. However, I just found out I am pregnant and I am sure that this diet isn't going to be good for the baby. Is it? Throughout my past pregnancy I ate tons of fresh fruit and lots of veggies and orange juice, etc. I really need some advice as to what I should be doing. Do I completely forget the diet why I am pregnant? Obviously I can't continue to lose weight like I have been doing. I am at a loss. Oh, and I have started my prenatal vitamins and put aside the Centrum that I was taking. Thanks and I would appreciate any advice. I am happy to have lost 33lbs and I know I am going to put it back on during the pregnancy but at least I know the secret to losing it when I have the baby ;-) Wendy J. Baby #2 due 12/01/04 |

Baby #2 due 12/01/04 Hi Wendy, I just found out I am pregnant as well. I've added back fruit and whole grains, and am eating more vegetables. I've had mostly no appetite so I've mostly been eating fruit and yogurt. I lost 6 lbs the first 2 weeks of pregnancy and have gained 1 back so far. I'm also curious about what others have to say about LC and pregnancy. I do have one thing to say.. you are eating for someone else now and so you should make sure you are eating the right things so that the baby is healthy. Just my 2 cents, Meagan EDD 11/26/04 |

Look up the "Brewer Diet" which was developed to include enough protein for
pregnant women. Very good diet to build a healthy baby! Best of luck to you! Jennifer 260/212/135 LC since 8/4/03 |

Low-Carbing & Pregnant
Wendy J. burbled across the ether:
Hi, I am a lurker on this group but read all the posts religiously :-) I have lost 33lbs since the beginning of December low-carbing (196 to 163). To lose this weight I haven't really been eating many carbs. I have stuck mainly to the induction phase. However, I just found out I am pregnant and I am sure that this diet isn't going to be good for the baby. Why is that? You are eating good food. Real food. Lots of protien (necessary for good brain development and the source of the building blocks of life) good quality fats (plenty of calories and essential fatty acids, and necessary to absorb and process some vitamins) and veggies chock full of vitamins and minerals. The only thing you have done is gotten rid of foods that don't add anything but calories. Is it? Throughout my past pregnancy I ate tons of fresh fruit and lots of veggies and orange juice, etc. I really need some advice as to what I should be doing. Get off of induction (if you are eating from the restricted list). Eat plenty of real food. I personally wouldn't go hog wild on the fruit juice-- it's mostly sugar water. While whole fruits are better because of the fiber slowing down the sugar absorption, most fruits don't offer anything that can't be gotten from veggies. I would treat even fresh fruit like candy-- an occassional treat. Do I completely forget the diet why I am pregnant? I wouldn't-- i.e. the 'diet' consists of more than the weight loss phase. Up your carbs above your ccll (you do know your cll? Well, then eat between 60-100g a day). Be sure the food choices you make are giving you the most bang for the bite. Obviously I can't continue to lose weight like I have been doing. I am at a loss. Oh, and I have started my prenatal vitamins and put aside the Centrum that I was taking. I would watch how much iron you ingest then. Cut back a little on the dark green veggies and red meat and eat more chicken and fish and red and yellow veggies. Thanks and I would appreciate any advice. I am happy to have lost 33lbs and I know I am going to put it back on during the pregnancy but at least I know the secret to losing it when I have the baby ;-) First things first. Relax. You aren't going to starve your baby by accident. Stick to real unprocessed foods and you'll do fine. And don't listen to scare stories. -- revek www.geocities.com/tanirevek/LowCarb.html lowcarbing since June 2002 5'2" 41 F 165+/too much/size seven petite please "There are two kinds of people in this world, and I am one of them." - Dave Barry |

Low-Carbing & Pregnant
I've seen "SugarBusters" recommended as a good read for pregnant women. Of
course all disclaimers defer to the ob/gyn, but you're not relegated to processed flours and sugars. Also try going to google.com "groups" and look up this group- search it for pregnant etc... you'll probably find some other good tidbits. Oh... and Congratulations!!!!!!I'm excited for you!!!! And avoid *all* supplements not specifically approved by your ob/gyn/doctor - all of these are drugs that can do serious harm to a developing fetus. |
